LIGHTING REGULATIONS
FOR CIVILIANS
SHELTER ISLAND, having been named a MILITARY AREA,
THE FOLLOWING ORl}ERS ARE IN EFFECT
FROM SUNSET TO SUNRISE.
1. All illumination of outdoor signs is prohibited.
HOUSE LIGHTING
(stores . hotels - dwellings)
2. All windows or other outlets shall be screened or darkened
so that direct light is not visible from seaward.
3. In all dwellings, stores, hotels or other buildings, shades shall
be so drawn that direct rays, from any interior lights cannot
shine outside above a horizontal line.
AUTOMOBILE LIGHTS

4. Parked or moving autos headed toward the sea shall extin-
guish ALL headlights.
5. Autos moving toward the sea or visible from seaward shall
drive with extreme caution and use ONLY their PARKING
LIGHTS. At all other times use ONLY dimmed or tilted ray
headlights.
FIRES
6. ALL burning of BRUSH or FIELDS or RUBBISH shall be
done and completed before sundown.
7. BEACH PARTIES are prohibited from building fires or us-
ing other lights after sundown.
PENALTY
FEDERAL LAW provides a fine of $5000 or one year in jail or
both for failure to comply with these regulations.
