SWC:Jl.-35 SUFFOLK COUNTY WaR COUNCIL Office of the Director of Civilian Protection Griffing Avenue Riverhead, New York June 16 1942 TO: De,puty County Directors of Civilian Protection SUBJ~CT: Automobile Headlight Regulations Pursuant to Chapter 544 of the Laws of 1942, Section 19, Para- graph 8, the following rules and regulations are hereby established for the control of automobile headlights throughout Suffolk County. These regulations supplement bulletin SWC:A-3l, dated June 2nd, and are to take effect immediately. BRIGHT OH UPPER BEAM HEADLIGHTS SHaLL aT NO TIME BE USED IN SUFFOLK COUNTY Traffic on the South Shore will be assigned to 3 zones; namely, l. All roads south of the Montauk Highway or Merrick Road. 2. The Montauk Highway or Merrick Road. 3. All roads north of the Montauk Highwa y to the Middle Country Road. Traffic on the North Shore will be assigned to 3 zones; namely, 1. All roads north of Pulaski Highway from the county line in Huntington to Kings Park, east on Route 25a to Wading River, east on Sound Avenue to Mattituck, east on Middle Road to Grcenport, and east on 25A to Orient. 2. Pulaski Highway from the county line in Huntington to Kings Park, east on Route 25A to Wading River, east on Sound Avenue to Mattituckl east on Middle Road to Greenport, and east on 25A to Orient. 3. All roads south of Pulaski Highway from the county line in Huntington to Kings Park, east on Route 25A to Wading River, east on Sound avenue to Mattituck, east on Middle Road to Greenport, and east on 25A to Orient. ~QNJL1-,- A. All automobile traffic using highways or roads south of Montauk Highway or Merrick Road from the county line in Amityville to Montauk Point shall use parking lights only. B. all automobile traffic using highways or roads north of Pulaski Highway from the county line in Huntington to Kings Park, cast on Route 25A to Wading River, east on Sound Avenue to Mattituck, east on Middle Road to Greenport, and east on Route 25A to Orient, shall use parking lights only. ~QJ:HL,g-,- A. All automobile traffic on what is known as the Montauk High- way or Merrick Road from the county line in Amityville to Montauk Point shall proceed with dim or deflected headlights with the following exceptions: 1. When proceeding through villages or other lighted sections, automobile traffic will proceed with park- ing lights. 2. Automobile traffic moving on any section of the Montauk Highway or Merrick Road, where their head- lights would be directly visible from seaward, shall move with parking lights. , f.. _ SViC:A-35 Z2ll!Ll:. ~ ;( c. - 2 - June 16 1942 3. Traffic moving over Oakdale bridges shall use parking lights. B. All automobile traffic on Pulaski Highway from the county line in Huntington to Kings Park, east on Route 25A to Wading River, east on Sound Avenue to Mattituck, east on Middle Road to Greenport, and east on Route 25A to Orient shall proceed with dim or deflected headlights with the following exceptions: 1. When proceeding through villages or other lighted sections, automobile traffic will proceed with parking lights. x x 2. A. All traffic moving on roads north of the Merrick Road or Montauk Highway to the Middle Country Road shall use dim or deflected beam lights, with the exception of those points where headlights would be directly visible from sea such as the East Moriches-Riverhead Road. B. All traffic moving on roads south of the Pulaski Highway from the county line in Huntington to Kings Park, east on Route 25A to Wading River, east on Sound avenue to Mattitucki east on Middle Road to Greenport, and east on Route 25A to Orient shall use dim or deflected beam headlights with the exception of those points orareas where headlights would be visible from seaward. ' , In all instances where traffic moves with parking lights, they must not travel at a speed greater than that compatible with public safety.
