HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/18/1987 A MOVED MAR 0 5 1987 c Town Clerk SotSVITHOLD TOWN LANDMARK PRE SERVAT ION C OMM I S S ION February 18, 1987 Present : John Stack, Joseph Townsend, William Peters, Ralph Williams and Joy Bear Visitors : Wesley Dickinson, Gary Williams Minutes of the January 28, 1987 ,meeting were read, discussed and__ _________ accepted . Southold Town Local Law ,#1, 1983, established the Landmark Preservation Commission and proscribed its duties . The Commission in 1987 is updating this law to qualify Southold Town to be a Certified .Local Government according to N.Y.State Office of Historic Preservation standards . A side benefit of this certification is that it would qualify us to receive grants from the state . Joe Townsend forwarded a completed copy of this draft update to Katherine Ridley in the Albany office, and she has responded that there seems to be no question of our being qualified for certification under the regulations , in the updated rules . John Stack was in Albany the week of February 23, and spoke to Lucy Brier and Austin O'Brien about this update of our local law . They indicated that under the updated law we seem to be eligible to be designated a Certified Local Government . Meanwhile, the Southold Town Code Committee is studying this document. Ralph ,Williams mentioned that, as the chairman of the L4ndmark Preservation Commission's 1990 celebration of the Town's 350th anniversary, he already has some plans and ideas in mind . - Wesley Dickinson is interested in restoring a little schoolhouse that was at the junction of Bay View Road and Elijah's Lane in Southold. It stood in the middle of the road at that spot before 1900. The LAndmark Commission asked Wesley to be the chairman of this project, and 'to explore its possibilities . Wesley met with James Bitses, Bill Albertson, the Park Commissioner of Southold Town, and Becky Terry, ' and is planning to contact service clubs . Wesley was told the Kiwanis was looking for a project . Gary Williams offered to move the building to a suitable location, when such a place is found . BETWEEN MEETING ACTIVITIES ROTARY PROGRAM Ralph Williams and John Stack gave a program at the Rotary Club on February- 17 that was well received . John introduced the program and Ralph showed his slides of Southold houses and gave a narrative that was really a lesson in local architectural history. "HOW OLD IS YOUR HOUSE" BOOK PROJECT John Stack invited Nicholas Langhart, architectural consultant of the Smithtown Historic Advisory Board, to advise us on the funding for toe - over - LANDMARK COMMISSIO ,18/87, page 2 book we are planning to publish, "How Old Is Your House?" Nick met at Town Hall with the Commission and Jim McMahon on February 20. He and Jim worked out a grant application, which has been mailed. FORT CORCHAUG PROPE TY William Peters) and John Stack met with John Chapin and real estate agent Donna Geraghty at the Cutchogue Library on February 27 to discuss a possible use for �he 100 acres on which Fort Corchaug is located. William Baxter owns the pro erty. Mr. Chapin is exploring the idea of creating an organic farm on the site, and building a few houses for farmers who would live in them and w o k the land to demonstrate early farm life. The houses would be built from lumber felled and milled on the property, and vintage toold,,iand equipment would be used to demonstrate how farming was done in Southold in times past. Naturally, the Fort- Corchaug site would be preserved . CHAPIN FARM PLAN AND LIZEfnTSKI FARM MUSEUM William Peters met with Paul Stoutenburg of :the Southold Town Board and John Halsey of Peconr�ic Land Trust at the Peters ' home on March 4 to discuss 1) the Chap3In Farm Plan (above) and 2) Dr. Joseph Lizewski's 186o's barn on Depot Lane In Cutchogue . (For more on barn, see Landmark minutes, January 1987. ) The utchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council is mulling the possibility of creating a farm museum in this vintage barn. REVISED LANDMARK ORDINANCE The Southold Town Code Committee met at Town Hall on March 4 . The first item on its agends w�is the revised Landmark responsibilities . Chairman Jay Schondebare and the committee took up the proposal item by item, "and made no major changes or suggggestions. The ordinance will now go to lawyer Robert Tasker. After he examines it, it will be forwarded to the Town Board. If the Town Board appro�, es the -document, it will then be presented to the people at a public hearing.
