The Department of Transportation notified the secretary of
the Commission that they would be moving Milestone #9 while
repairing and widening Main Road in Laurel . Joe Seplavy , 298-5646 ,
of the D. O.T. called . They will store this historic milestone
marker with the Southold Historical Society , and replace it when
their work is done .
Richard Winchey of the Nassau County Museum called the
secretary to say that museum might be interested in acquiring an
early home that is scheduled to be moved or phased out . It is on
the Timothy Coffey property , 44900 Main Road , Southold . Mr .
Winchey asked if the Landmark Commission had any background
knowledge of the house . John Stack , Ralph Williams , William
Peters and Joy Bear volunteered to inventory the home and to
send Mr . Winchey a copy of the report . They did this , with their
report below. (On April 2 the Nassau County Museum decided
against acquiring the property , and thanked the Landmark Commis-
sion for • its comprehensive and excellent report . )
The 1766 House on Main Road , Mattituck , was next on the
agenda . Agnes Lyons , the owner , is receiving some help from the
North Fork Housing Alliance . Her income makes her eligible for
this aid . The Housing Alliance will upgrade her furnace , hot
water heater and bathroom. This aid is much appreciated . How-
ever , the house is in dire need of a major overhaul . Gary Williams
says it suffers from dry rot . The house is historic . It was built
in 1766 by William Wells V . British officers were housed there
during the Revolution . Mrs . Lyons has papers and documentation .
There was some discussion on how the house might be saved ,
who might help financially and what the Landmark Commission might
do about this project .
Bill Peters discussed the Local Landmark Law, which has been
updated by the Landmark Commission , and examined and passed by the
Code Committee . It will be discussed , and hopefully , accepted , by
the Town Board next Tuesday , March 24 . Commissioners are urged to
attend this work session . '
John Stack reported that Nicholas Langhart will be moving to
Boston to work for SPINEA . Nick was the one who wrote the grant
request for the Commission to finance our proposed booklet , "How
Old Is Your House?" John says Nick will continue his interest in
our book , as we develop it .

Looking forward to 1990 , John suggested as a 300th anniversary
project that we might create a tape which can be played in a car
as it travels down Main Road through Southold Town . The tape would
describe houses on either side of the road as the car passes .
Wesley Dickinson was unable to be present , but sent a written
report on his progress on the Bayview School Project . Briefly , Wesley
found Lou Edson willing to donate the property on which the school
once stood . Parker and Chet Dickerson , who own the schoolhouse ,
seem willing to sell/donate it . John Halsey of Peconic Land Trust
has offered to serve as a conduit to provide tax write-offs to the
donors . Mike Hagerman , owner of the Peconic Bay Shopper , will try
to elicit Kiwanis support for moving and restoring the house . Wesley
has also spoken to former teachers and pupils who attended the
school , and he feels encouraged by everyone ' s interest and
enthusiasm.
Antonia Booth reported on her plans for two upcoming celebrations, J
the 200th anniversary of the writing of the Constitution , and outhold
Town ' s 350th Anniversary in 1990 . She plans to have Southold Town
designated an official Bicentennial Community , accompanied by
appropriate celebrations this fall . She is also planning ahead
for the 360th Anniversary of our Town .
BETWEEN MEETING ACTIVITIES
1 . The Timothy Coffey House , 44900 Main Road , Southold
Inspected March 20 , 1987
Commissioners Ralph Williams , John Stack , William Peters and
Joy Bear inspected this house and wrote a report that includes a
floorplan and an elevation . One copy is on file . A second was sent
at his request to Richard Winchey , Nassau County Museum Library ,
Hofstra Library Building , 1000 Hempstead Turnpike , Hempstead , N.Y.
11550 .
2 . Commission members attended the work session of the Town
Board on March 20 . The Town Board accepted the updated Landmark
Law as presented .
3 . The VanBourgondien House , Main Road , Peconic 11958 .
Ralph Williams , John Stack , William Peters and Joy Bear
inventoried this house on March 27 . The structure is slated for
demolition . The Commissioners found the house interesting in that
it reflects the changing taste in architecture from 1850 on .
However , the architectural style is not unique , and makes no
significant contribution to the architectural heritage of Southold
Town. The owner needs the 1r!d for his greenhouse business , and
finds restoration impossbily expensive . Therefore the Landmark
Commission will not disapprove the demolition of this house .

Ralph Williams , John Stack , William Peters and Joy
Bear visited this house on April 6 .
This is a historic property , in danger of disintegrating
through lack of upkeep . It was built in 1766 by William Wells V.
