LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION MEETING
Wednesday , April 15 , 1987
Present : John Stack , William Peters , Ralph Williams , Joseph
Townsend and Joy Bear
Visitors : Antonia Booth and Gary Williams
The meeting opened with the minutes being approved
as read .
In response to a letter from William Peters , Katherine
Ridley , assistant counsel of the N .Y . State Historic Preservation
wrote :
"The version of the law you sent with your March 18 , 1987
letter meets all the requirements of the Certified Local Govern-
ment program. "
She congratulated the commission . Her letter , and
William Peter ' s letter to her , are attached to this report .
Tax advantages to owners of historic houses were discussed .
Also discussed was the naming of a historic district , and the
advantages of owning a home in such a district . John Stack suggested
that the commission consider preparing an informational leaflet on
the subject . This should be of interest to the owners of historic
homes and also to the general public . _
Antonia Booth suggested , in this connection , that a brief
weekly question-and-answer article be prepared on this subject and
offered .to the local newspapers during this Constitution year .
This suggestion was well received . Ralph Williams went a step
further and suggested an every-other-week newspaper article ,
illustrated with photographs , on subjects tying local
architecture and history with the Constitution . This suggestion
was also cordially received .
John Stack passed out fliers regarding seminars for local
government officials , to be held on May 19 on the SUNY campus in
Old Westbury . Several Commissioners expressed interest in g
attending the session on the 1986 Environmental Quality Bond Act .
We will probably attend as a group .
John read a notice from David Emilita , Town Planner , regarding a
Draft Environmental Impact Statement on a subdivision planned
near Wolf Pit Lake , Mattituck . This 64 acre tract includes a
pre-1875 home and is of unusual historical significance . After a

a Lengthy discussion , and a study of the blueprint and accompany-
ing description of the projected work , the Commission expressed no
objection to development , with the following proviso : that the
facade of the existing house be maintained in its present style ,
and not be altered in any way . Secretary Joy Bear was asked to
send a response to Mr . Emilita , and to file the blueprint and data .
Landmark Commissioners Ralph Williams , William Peters , John
Stack and Joy Bear had spent two days , April 6 and 7 , examining
the historic home of Agnes Lyons in Mattituck , the "1766 House . "
so called because it was built in 1766 by William Wells V .Time
was spent at the meeting on April 15 in working over and correcting
the draft report on this house . A copy of this report will be sent
to Lance Mallamo , Suffolk County director of Historic Services .
Joseph Town has been able to get copies of a model Certificate
of Appropriateness , which he passed to each board member .
John announced that the Commission will give a program and
slide show to the Mattituck Historical Society on October 27 .
The meeting was adjourned at 10: 30 p .m.
