LANDMARK COMMISSION MEETING, November 17, 1987 Term CLlk Sbcld
Present : John Stack, Joseph Townsend, William Peters, Ralph Williams
and Joy Bear. Visitors : Gary Williams and Phyllis Babcock.
Ralph Williams opened the meeting with a report on two group:.
visits made to his 17th Century restored house by students and
their instructors during the past month:
1) Frank Turano and his archaeology class from Stony Brook
University, who came to look at the grounds and restored house . This
class had classified about 15,000 shards recovered from under Ralph's
restored house .
2) Abbott Cummings and his archaeological-,history class came from
Yale University to review Ralph's house against pre-Revolutionary framed
wood houses of early Connecticut .
The commissioners reviewed their work on a small house on the Fred
Lappe farmlands on Main Road, Southold. The little house has been
purchased by Gary Williams . Ralph, John and Bill studied the h6use from 1
11 a .m. to 5 p.m. on November 16. After stripping plastek and laths,
and studying hand-hewn beams and hardware including a door hinge with
remnants of the commissioners decided the building
could date to _the Early 18th. Century, and be one 6f Southold Is oldest.
The commissioners will meet again on November 24 to continue studying this
house.
Also discussed at this meeting was Peter Stoutenburgh's house - the
"Doctors ' House . " The commissioners had spent several hours examining
this house during the previous week. They found fascinating clues which
raised more questions than answers . The commissioners plan to study the
house again soon.
Joe Townsend donated to the Landmarks file a newspaper clipping
dating to the time the Hartranft house was destroyed, and other materials .
Joe Twonsend would like to see the Landmark Commission given
power to designate and protect landmark structures in Southold Town. At
present we have no such authority. However, Joh Stack plans to talk with 7,1c
Vic Lessard, to suggest that any demolition or irreversable alteration
to a Southold Town landmark structure be delayed 14 days to give the
commissioners a chance to study the project and offer alternatives .
On Saturday, November 14, Ralph Williams gave an illustrated lecture
to the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historifal Council on similarities between
their "Old House" and his Terry-Mulford house .
The commissioners met at the home of Joy Bear on Nov. 30 and
Dec . 4 to plan their upcoming book, "How Old Is Your House?"
