HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/07/1987 RECEIVED JAN 141987 'own Clerk Southold Regular meeting of SOUTHOLD TOWN LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION Wednesday, January 7, 1987 - 7:30 p.m. Town Hall, Southold PRESENT: Bill Peters, Joy Bear, Joe Townsend and Jean Cochran ABSENT: John Stack and Ralph Williams (both in California . ) VISITORS : Antonia Booth, newly appointed Town Historian, and Gary Williams In the absence of the chairman, William Peters presided . He announced that Merrill Hesch, NYS Historic Preservation Department head in New York City will visit Cutchogue on January 21, to look at the Village Green and its f'ourt_buildings . The Landmark Commission is seeking to have this area designated a historic district . The area includes the Village Green, Cutchoque Library,, Wickham farmhouse, 19th Centuyy schoolhouse, and the Old House. The Old House is already on the National Register. Appropriate celebrations for Southold 's 350th anniversary in 1990 were discussed .A letter from Sir Arnold de Montmorency of Southw old, England, has been received , Sir Arnold stated that the mayor of Southwold plans to commemorate 1990 (Southwold 's 500th anniversary) with a visit to Southold in the summer of 1990. Supervisor Frank Murphy has responded with a letter to Sir Arnold stating that Southold would welcome the British mayor, and that we here are beginning to prepare for the anniversary. Mr. Murphy turned Sir Arnold' s letter and the 1990 project over to Jean Cochran, who says she has already discussed the project briefly with the Town Board . Previously, Ralph Williams had been designated by the Landmark Commission as our � project planner. Joe Townsend suggested that the Landmark Commission,' could begin the preparation of slide shows, photographs and exhibits,, for 1990. Antonia Booth suggested that public school pupils might be encouraged to research and write themes on historic topics such as Meig 's Raid, whaling and other aspects of our local history. BEDTEEN MEETING ACTIVITIES 1 . ON Wednesday, January 7 Ralph Williams arranged a program for the Republican Club.Ralph presented a slide show illustrating how historic houses can be restored, illustrated with his own home, the Herbert-Terry house in Orient. He also showed slides of Georgian houses of Southold . Bill Peters showed slides of houses of worship in Southold Town which are now in secular use. The program was well received . 2 . On January 13 and January 15 commission members met in Joe Townsend 's Greenport office to work on a landmark preservatiob law for Southold over LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION PAGE 2 Town. They studied the present law, Local Law #1, 1983 - and also the law suggested by the N.Y. State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The finalized version will be submitted to the Town Board . 3. Another between-meeting work session should be set up soon to study the new 1987 NYSCA grant rules, and send in our grant application.
