Joy Dear had sent her regrets because of'a previous commitment. Kenneth Godfrey was elected Chairman and Louis Black, Secretary, esch to serve for.one year. The following items were agreed upon: (1) First priority will be to develop an initial list of landmarks, but this will necessitate: a. Drawing up criteria which can be used in identifying and designating landmarks; b. Using existing lists of landmarks (such as--the Mattituck list of 67 structures, the three sectional Bicentennial-map of Southold Town, the Orient structures appearing in the National Register,' etc,) as a take-off point; c. Grouping the landmarks chronologically, tackling first the pre-1800 era, then the 1800-1850 period, etc. (2) The Commission will attempt to have the first list of landmarks (probably the ,pre-1800 group) ready for submission to the Town Board in five or six months. (3) -The Commission will prepare a modest operational budget (to include Postage,, telephone costs,-letterhead stationery) for submission to the Town Board. (4) Meetings will be held on the third Wednesday of every month at 7:30 in the Town Hall, providing the Town Clerk sees no serious conflict with other meetings. (5) The Commission will initially channel publicity, which it feels is an important aspect of its educational responsibilities, through the Town authorities.
