bwpq Q`yk Roeoffi"9d MINUTES - SOUTHOLD TOWN LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION
November 28, 1985
Present : Ralph Williams, William Peters, Louis Black and Joy Bear. Absent
because of illness, John Stack.
The meeting opened with William Peters reading the following postcard,
addressed to him:
Dear Bill:
If the Preservation Commission is thinking of replacing missing
milestones, Mrs. Corwin Grathwohl has some stone she would be
willing to donate . Stuart Staples of Greenport cut the stone by
the Presbyterian manse in Southold . The Town did the setting.
New Suffolk Council was responsible for any cost, etc .
Winnie Billard .
This offer was received favorably by the commissioners present. Southol
Town has only three missing milestones out of 24 . It was suggested that we
make a diligent search for the three missing stones . If they cannot be found
we will contact Mrs . Corwin Grathwohl for the stone and Stuart Staples for
cutting it. We will -petition the Town Board for setting the necessary
markers .
The next meeting date would normally fall on December 26, a date that
seems unsuitable, as did the third Thursday, December 19. William Peters
suggested that we meet on the second Thursday, December 12, and --this date
was accepted. Bill Peters also commented that we should meet every two w6Eks
to keep up with events . This suggestion was tabled .
Joy Bear said that several people have requested that our studies of
individual houses (at the invitation of the owners ) should be stored in a
location more accessible to the public . Ralph Williams initiated these
in-depth evaluations of Southold houses, and he has been joined by John Stac
We now have files on eleven houses, and complete about one a month. The
commission instructed that Magdalene Goodrich, Southold Town- historian,
be loaned the files . She has duplicated a set for her office and sent a set ,-
Barbara Van Liew of SPLIA, vaho is currently inventorying the Town. Our copie
(with transparencies which cannot be duplicated) remain in the Landmark
Preservation C6mmission files .
We have had two exhibits in Town Hall, at the invitation of Town Board
member Joe Townsend . They were "Religious Buildings Now In Secular Use" and
"Southild Town Mile Markers . " Commissioner Ralph Williams has a slide show
on how to recognize Colonial and Georgian houses, illustrated with Southold
houses, which he has presented to several organizations . It was suggested
that after we accumulate a few more exhibits and slide shows, we might run
stories in the newspapers that these titles are available for loan to such
places as schools, banks and civic clubs . This fulfills two duties the
commission is charged with : 1) to "encourage the preservation of landmarks
through educational activities" and 2 ) , promote and encourage historic
awareness and judicious concern for designated landmarks . ; (Local Law #1,198

Chairman Louis Black said that he took the chairmanship for six months,
which have elapsed. He said that the pressures and responsibilities of his
business, including travel, make it impossible for him to continue as
chairman. He nominated John Stack to fill his position. Ralph Williams
agreed to approach John and have this decision made before the next meeting,
December 12.
The program for the next meeting will be a discussion of the Landmark
Commissions goals and duties . At the January meeting Louis Black has agreed
to give a history of the Long Island Railroad, with illustrations . This
could turn into another Town Hall exhibit. At the February meeting Ralph
Williams has agreed to discuss Southold ' s historic cemeteries - another
exhibit or slide show possibility.
