Members present were John Stack, Ralph Williams, Louis Black and Joy Bear. William teters was out of town. Nine visitors were present. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved . It had been suggested at the previous meeting, January 23, that owners of Southold Town houses designated as landmarks be recognized in several ways . One suggestion was that they be given an attractive certificate . Another was that a suitable marker be placed on the building to show the Town's appreciation of its merits . Two sample certificates were offered by Joy Bear. William Peters had offered to submit sample certificates, too. As he was out of town, no decision was reached until the commission can study his suggestions . A metal marker - like the one Edwin Prellwitz designed, :,arid which the Southold Historical Society placed on landmark buildings in the town - was loaned by George Wagoner and shown to the commissioners . ,,--The general feeling was that this marker was most attractive, but other styles should be considered before a decision was made . A letter from Barbara Van Liew of SPLIA, who is inventorying Southold Town for us, said that she is preparing a map of Southold Town, based on D.O.T. maps and drawn on mylar. On the map will be located all houses she has inventoried . The map can be photostated, or sections of it copied, as needed. Barbara also had kind words to say about the Norris house on the bay in Cutchogue, whose fate is uncertain. The commission authorized the chairman, John Stack, to quote her letter and send or take a written suggestion to the Planning Board from the Landmark Commission, drawing their attention to the fact that this home should be preserved°=:and not altered . The speaker of the evening was Nicholas La,nghart, restoration consultant and property manager of the Smithtown Historical Society, and curator of Hallockville . He gave a most helpful, informal talk on,,architecture, with many questions and comments from the audience. First he defined ' landmark' as a degignation based on age, aesthetics and good design. Landmarks-, he said, are important in expressing the evolution of a community. A good relationship between the Landmark and the Building Departments is important to both organizations . The role of an architectural review board was discussed by Mr. Langhart and by the audience . Mr. Langhart suggested that the results of SPLIA' s Town inventory be published as a book, with photographs . He was told that the Commission is planning a booklet, titled "How Old Is Your House", based on local architectural styles . Other activities of our commission were discussed : - exhibits of the Town's milestone markers, and of local houses of worship now in secular use; and staff members active as speakers before local civic and community associations . Our local inventory of houses by Ralph Williams and John Stack, upon request by the owners, was -heartily complimented. Mr. Langhart stated that we have ane tionall active P Y Landmark Commission. The next meeting will also be on a Wednesday. (not our usual fourth Thursday. ) It will be Wednesday, March 26, 1986. AGENDA FOR MARCH 263 ,1986 MEETING- For discussion: 1 .
