ANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION
LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION MEETING
THURSDAY, AUGUST 24, 2000
MINUTES
Present were: John Green, John Stack, Ralph Williams, Herb Adler,
Diane Ravitch, Mary Jablonski, Peg Murphy, Mel Phaff,
Peter Deutsch, Alice Hussie, and people from the
Oregon Road Corridor.
Peter Deutsch spoke to the Commission - they are having a meeting
in Orient on Sunday, August 27th. Allison Cornish will speak at the
meeting. She has been helpful to other towns going through the CLG
process. The second meeting with the Town Board was on Tuesday,
August 15th. Mr. Deutsch felt that the Landmark Preservation Commission
should speak to each member of the Town Board and explain the import-
ance of historic preservation.
Bill Sharp from the Department of State says that there has to be a
commitment to historic preservation in order to receive funds for local
waterfront revitalization. If the laws of the Town are written in a way
for CLG status, that would satisfy the Department of State. They want
a law with teeth.
The Oregon Road corridor people have an interest in preserving Oregon
Road--the architecture, barns, etc. Mary Jablonski said there is money
for barn restoration. The program is funded by the State. They feel
Oregon Road should be an historic district with legal protection. Ralph
Williams told the people that the LMPC would be glad to help them and
to discuss all aspects of historic preservation. Mr. Deutsch invited the
-2-
Oregon Road families to come to their meeting on Sunday, August 27th, as
he felt they could learn a lot..and it will raise their awareness.
Kathie Ridley reviewed the work that Ralph and Herb had done. She will
be coming back to speak to the Town Board. She will brief the Town Board
of the State's requirements. John Greene asked Herb and Ralph to review
Kathie's comments.
Historic Building Inventory - this has been given to the members of the
Commission. 'Also, it was given to the Building Department with a disc.
Diane Ravitch and John Greene went to Plum Island. They visited a
number of military structures--World War I vintage. The interiors are in
terrible condition. They both said it was a beautiful island.
Letters will be sent to the historical societies for. a lecture series. Diane
Ravitch has a seat on the New York Council for the Humanities and said
there is funding available for lectures.
Whitaker House - a letter was received from John Collins with a preliminary
restoration budget.
Helen Keller Cottage - the issue is that Suffolk County owns it and it is
ready for demolition. It is on the SPLIA list. The County has owned it
since the 1960's. John Green spoke to the last owner of the cottage and
she said at one time it was truly spectacular. It is now derelict. The
Commission felt there syould be public awareness of this but would have
to have more facts. Peg Murphy and Diane Ravitch felt that a letter
should be written to the County and also to the Helen Keller foundation.
The next meeting of the LMPC is scheduled for Thursday, September 21,
2000 at 4:00 p.m.
With no further business to be conducted, the meeting was adjourned at
6:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
