SOUTHOLD TOWN ' RECEIVED
LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION
JAN 13M
Landmark Minutes
January 11, 1995 tan CWR QW0fd
1. The meeting started at 7:30. Bob Bayley, John Page and Ralph Williams were excused.
2. The November minutes were reviewed and accepted.
3. We enjoyed reading "Cliffs Notes". He submitted his copy on the various migrations that ar-
rived in Southold Town. We certainly are an interesting and varied population. It was interesting
to note that Greenport was at one time an official port of entry to the United States. The material
was sent to Edgar Marvin via Valerie . Valerie reports that Edgar is recuperating and making
slow but steady progress. We all wish him well.
We are also rooting for a rapid recovery from surgery for Bob Bayley and John Page.
4. Ralph was contacted by Gary Gentile of D.O.T. for some help in locating the site of a Revolu-
tionary fort at Oyster Ponds. It seems S.H.P.O. in Albany would not approve the surfacing of the
parking lot at the Orient ferry parking lot until D.O.T. found the location of a reported "fort".
With the help of the Oysterponds library and Don Boehrum, a 1700's map was produced. Griffin's
Journal produced a reference. Later Ralph found the map reproduced on the brochure for the
250th celebration and the fort was located between the ferry landing and the point. This placed
the fort well out of reach of the parking lot. The referance in Griffin was for a breastwoorks. It
would seem that not too much of it would remain. Also referances indicate that the oordinance
was removed.
5. We reviewed the Supervisor's budget memo and all agreed with the need for the cuts. Other
avenues for rinancing the brochure are being investigated.
6. Bob Kasner will contact Albany to let them know we are interrested in the Heritage Highway
idea and offer our help.
7. We distributed copies of Proceedural Due Process in plain English. We are indebted to The
National Trust for their fast reply to our requeat.
8. We reviewed Bob Bayley's request to start work on Sparky Coyle's Landmark Designation. We
are anxious to start as soon as Bob is ready.

9. All present were reminded to start thinking about our local Preservation Awards. May is
Preservation Month and we try to meet that Town Board meeting. Ideas will be an agenda item
for our next meeting.
10. We received the report on the Preservation Commisswion Identificatiiiiiiiiion Project. Some
months ago we were asked to fill out a questioaire. The results are very interesting and we need
to study them. This was a national study and it is helpful to see where we fit in the scheme of
things.
11. The next meeting date was set for Feb. 22 at 7:30.
Respectfully submitted,
6ohn A. Stack Chairman
