LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION
LANDMARK MINUTES
JUNE 11 , 1996
1 . The meeting started at 7:30 p.m. Present were: Cliff Benfield,
Ralph Williams, Bob Kassner, Toni Boyd and Barbara Jones.
2. The Minutes of the May 7, 1996 meeting were accepted as read.
3. The next meeting of the commission is scheduled for Tuesday,
July 16, 1996 at 7:30 p.m.
4. Critique of the Awards Presentations on May 28th - Everything
went well - The write-ups on both the Cutchogue Diner and
the "Commoners" property were -very educational.
5. Fort Corchaug Site - The commission is pleased with the efforts
of the Town Board in its acquisition of a portion of the Fort
Corchaug site and enthusiastically endorses its work in its
preservation. The Landmark Preservation Commission encourages
the Town Board to enlist its help on the Fort Corchaug project.
6. Distribution of Landmark Plaques - Cliff brought in the landmark
plaques to show the members. The commission discussed the
possible distribution of these plaques to properties that have
been designated as landmarks�at no charge to the owners. These
plaques can be mounted to the outside of the building or may become
part of the descriptive designation for a nominal fee of $25.00,
which the Landmark commission would prepare.
7. Special Sheets of Southold Landmarks - Barbara Jones' work.
Barbara Jones has done an excellent job with this list. This will
become an archive for each landmark.

8. Gideon Young House Renovation - Bob Kassner pulled the
property card and there was no building permit issued.
Bob will check what the criteria is for a building permit.
9. Scopaz/Vail House - the commission discussed the possible
basis for making this house a landmark or historic site.
Bob Kassner will make the arrangement with Valerie Scopaz
to have the commission inspect the house on July 1st at 9:30
a.m.
10. Inspection Reports - there are may outstanding inspection
reports.
11 . The Commission received an application from the owner of the
Jeremiah Vail House_ at Main Road and Laurel Lane. It has
history going back to 1656. Cliff will make arrangement with
the owner for the commission to inspect it on July 2nd at
9:30 a.m.
With no further business to be discussed, the meeting was u
adjourned at 9:25 p.m.
