LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION MEETING
AUGUST 13, 1996
MINUTES

Present were: Bob Kassner, Deborah, John aWinsor Ralph

2. The next meeting of the Landmarli996e�e ht after the on Commission
Town Board
held on Tuesday, September 17, g
presents the plaques to the landmark designated- properties.
3. The commission reviewed the letter written to Mr. Robert A. M.
Stern, Director, Historic Preservation Program at Columbia University
in recognition of Barbara Jones' .work with the commission during her
summer internship.
4. Mr. Eric Haesche, owner of the Jeremiah Vail House found a huge file
on the history of his house. After studying the contents of this
file, Mr. Haesche feels that it_should be called the Vail-Booth House.
Mr. Haesche is very interested in the workings of the commission
and would like to attend meetings of the commission and possibly be
an alternate member.
5. "Treasure House" - Southold Historical Society. Cliff spoke with Don
Bayles, President of the Southold Historical Society regarding the
redesignation of the Treasure House. There is nothing in the file or
history that would indicate that

was made by Ralph Williams and 'seconded by Bob Kassner to
remove the Treasure House from our Town Landmark Register.
All were in favor.
6. There will be plaque presentations to the owners of landmarks

in Orient, Greenport and New Suffolk on
On September 17, 1996 plaque presentations will be made to owners
of landmarks in Peconic, Southold, Laurel and Mattituck. The
commission received a letter from Jame Minerva of the Cutchogue
Library thanking the commission for the plaque. John Stack
suggested that everybody visit the History Room at the Cutchogue
Library.
7. Progress of Landmark Directory - Barbara Jones suggested the
possibility of sending letters to all landmark owners to see if they
have any deeds, plans or any new information that they would like
to share with the commission. This information could be included
in the directory.
8. NYS A-8852 - Property Tax Relief for Historic Rehabilitation. The
commission discussed this bill. The upkeep on a landmark house is
much more than on a more modern one.
9. Fort Corchaug Draft = Southold Land Preservation Commission's
Memorandum - The commission reviewed the draft on Fort Corchaug.
Some changes were made. It will be sent to Supervisor Cochran
and members of the Town Board. Melissa Spiro will meet with the
commission on. August 20th to answer any of their questions.
10. Scopaz House Inspection - oe Scosr will again try to set up
an inspection date with paz
11 . Open Discussion - None
With no further business to be discussed, the meeting was adjourned
at 9:45 p.m.
