LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION
LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION MEETING
WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 1998
MINUTES
Present were: John Greene, Herb Adler, Ralph Williams, John Stack
and John Cronin.
A motion was made by Ralph Williams and seconded by Herb Adler to
approve the Minutes of the April 22, 1998 meeting. All were in favor.
Asip application - the write-up from the Asips is a little more complete.
John Stack thought it was a unique farmhouse, as did other members
of the commission. A motion was mad_ a by Ralph Williams and seconded
by John Cronin to recommend to the Town Board that the Asip house
become a designated landmark. All were in favor. Ralph will do the
write-up.
Education Committee - the Southold Historical Society asked John Stack
and Ralph Williams to do a presentation. Herb Adler attended this
presentation and said it was very well worthwhile. A one hour and
fifteen minute slide show was also given. John and Ralph will be giving
the summer course at the Southold Library. This course will begin on
July 27th and continue through August 17th. The members of the
course will also visit some historic houses on the last two Saturdays
in August.
Buildings at Fort Corchaug - Margot Booth of the Peconic Land Trust
contacted John Greene to look at two buildings at Fort Corchaug and
discussed possible restoration. John will make arrangements with Margot

to have the commission visit the site the week of June 15th or 22nd.
John Cronin suggested that possibly some of the service-oriented
organizations might be helpful.
'There are seven plaques left from last year. The secretary will send
a final letter to those people who never picked up their plaques to
see if they want them.
Membership in the National Trust - the commission decided it would be
helpful and informative to apply for membership in the National Trust. ,
Whitaker House - nothing new at this time.
Southold Landmark Law - Incentives - the commission discussed possible
incentives the Town could give to encourage restoration of designated
landmarks. Perhaps if they invest money the way the Town wants it
done, they could get a tax credit for a certain period of time, if they
follow the rules. Herb Adler will check the tax rolls at the assessors'
office for further information.
New Business - Bill Peters of the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical
Society asked John Stack if the commission could ..support them in
their plight to get some grant money for replacing the clapboard
to its original configuration in the Old House on the Cutchogue Village
Green. The commission was in favor of supporting this grant application.
A letter will be written in favor from the commission.
It was suggested that the awards presentation should be scheduled for
early fall.
The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, 1998 at 7:30 p.m.
A motion was made by Ralph Williams and seconded by John Cronin to
adjourn the meeting at 8:50 p.m. All' were in favor.
