New York 11971 (516) 765-1801 ti�ol �a SOUTHOLD TOWN LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION MEETING AUGUST 19, 1997 MINUTES Present were: Deborah Winsor, Ralph Williams, John Greene, John; Stack and John Cronin 1 . A motion was made by John Cronin and seconded by John Greene to accept the minutes of the July 8, 1997 meeting. All were in favor. 2. The next meeting of the commission will be Tuesday, September 16, 1997 at 7:30 p.m. 3. Status of Adult Eduction Course - John Cronin said things are pretty much set for the adult ed course being offered this fall. It will be 4 Thursdays starting September 25th and 2 Saturday trips to landmark homes on October 18th and 25th. Ralph offered his house for one of the visits. The cost .of the course is $35.00, which will include a copy of the "Register of Designated Landmarks." The course will cover styles of buildings, structural aspects of older buildings, perhaps roofing, siding, windows and doors and also a discussion of mechanical and electrical in older buildings. John Stack Stack ,said that Ralph had many slides of houses that would be helpful with the presentation. It. was suggested,that perhaps Mr. Maffetone's house- could be the second house shown. 4. Visit to Fishers Island - Deborah went for the yearly Town Board meeting on Fishers Island. Deb said it was very interesting. She saw the old fort and other buildings in the area. There are-no land- mark buildings on Fishers Island. Deb spoke with John Thatcher, who will contact the owners of some of the older buildings on the island and see if they are interested in registering them. Louis Evans is also interested in having landmark buildings on Fishers Island, Deb will follow up for next meeting. J -2- 5. Schedule visits to two houses that have submitted applications. Deb will try to reach Mr. Maffetone and set up a visit. The commission will visit John Greene's home on Tuesday, September 9, 1997 at 3 p.m. 6. Status of milestone survey and inventory - Ralph, Deborah and John Stack have done a complete inventory with photos and a survey of their true locations. They have the information for a spread sheet. Southold has 20 markers. At the Town Board meeting on Fishers Island, Deb spoke with Gil Diaz from the NYS DOT who was very interested in these milestones. 7. Fort Corchaug Ad Hoc Subcommittee - The supervisor's office is putting together a subcommittee for Fort Corchaug. Deb sent a letter to Supervisor Cochran requesting that a member from our commission be included on this committee. 8. SPLIA Funding Conference, September 11, 1997 - Deb and perhaps John Greene will go to the conference. The commission does get requests from homeowners about funding. If they go to the con- ference they will be able to find out who is eligible for funding and what grants are available. Old Business - John Greene had a conversation with Ms. Shea of the Lester/Swrrs House. She is still checking further into its history. They are still enthusiastic. New Business - John Stack and Ralph met with Ellen DeMaria of the Traveler- Watchman. She was given information on the Landmark Preservation Commission. She then bought the "Houses of Southold" and the "Register of Designated Landmarks."
