LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION
LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION MEETING
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1997
MINUTES
Present were: Ralph Williams, ,John Stack, Erich Haesche, Bob Kassner,
John Greene and Maureen Shea
The next meeting of the Landmark Preservation Commission is
scheduled for Tuesday, December 16, 1997 at 7:30 p.m.
Ralph read a letter from John Cronin thanking Ralph and Mrs. Williams
for opening their home to the members of the Historic Old Buildings
course. Erich also received a letter thanking him.
Since John Cronin could not be at the meeting tonight he asked that the
secretary read the following letter. "Please express my thanks for the
extensive efforts of Ralph Williams in working on the Historic Buildings
l Course. He was a wealth of information and assistance and the course°
would not have been what it was without his help. Also, express my
thanks to Ralph, Mrs. Williams and Erich for their wonderful hospitality
and patience in opening their homes to the class. Their homes as
' hands on' laboratories for landmark structures coupled with the ability
to talk to landmark owners in a casual and personal setting served to
round out all' that was discussed in class. "
The commission should consider whether additional courses are worthy of
preparation for the Winter Adult Ed. Session. Ken Reeves has asked me
to consider possible continued efforts in this area. In connection with
that, I surveyed class participants with a questionnaire at the conclusion
of the course to discover how we did, along with additional interests
-2-
they may have. As it included 13 questions, I have not tallied the
results as yet. However, it is clear the course was well. received
and considerable interest exists for additional instruction in related
areas. I suggest we seek a volunteer from the commission to prepare
a syllabus for a new course in a related area. Not only will another
course keep up the momentum we have established, but revenues
from it will help offset our expenses--moving us closer to being a self-
sustaining government body that operates at a lower cost to taxpayers."
A motion was made by Ralph Williams and seconded by John Stack to
construct a syllabus for a course. All were in favor. This will be
on the agenda for the December 16th meeting. Ralph said that John
did a great job with the course.
Cahoon/Cosden Estate Historic District - The commission reviewed John
Greene's teeter to the people involved in the Cahoon/Cosden Estate
Historic District.- A motion was made by Ralph Williams and seconded
by John Stack that John's letter be sent to all the people in the
suggested district to let them know that the Southold Town Landmark
Preservation Commission would like to create an historic district. All
were in favor.
The commission discussed the Ted James' application. The secretary was
asked to make an appointment with Mr. James so the commission can .
inspect his home.
Lester/Storrs House - John Greene is helping Maureen Shea through the
process. Most of the factual information has been pulled out. The wording
with respect to the history of the house will have to be determined. Ralph
explained to Ms. Shea the progression of the facts for the history. The
members asked Ms. Shea to write up the history and present it to the
commission and then they will review it.
Supervisor Cochran asked the commission to look at the then proposed
cellular towers' law. The commission finds that the law is well written
and fully covers historic considerations.
Deb Winsor is resigning from the chairmanship, as she is attending school
in New York City. She is very interested in the milestones- and will be
doing an .indepth study.
With no further business to be discussed, the meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
R spectfully submitted
