LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION
LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION MEETING
TUESDAY, APRIL 25, 2000 at 4:00 P.M.
MINUTES
Present, were: John Greene, Herb Adler, Mel Phaff, Ralph Williams,
John Stack, Gordon Moore, Supervisor Cochran, Councilman Murphy,
Ed Forrester, Scott Russell, Jay Applegate, Charles Sanders and
Gwen from the Suffolk Times.
Ed Forrester spoke to the Commission about the Shady Lady. The current
owners approached the Building Department and said they wanted to rent
several rooms on the upper level and a restaurant on the lower level.
However, 'so many things would have to be changed and fixed that they
decided to go for transient rental use instead of a B S B. This would
require Planning Board approval and a State of New York variance: All
approvals were finally achieved and a building permit was finally issued
on April 23rd. On Friday, April 20th they started to demolish the building.
None of the departments were aware that the Shady Lady was an historic
building. John Greene said it was evident that the present system of
flagging an historic building did not work. The Shady Lady can't be fixed
but something has to be done to prevent this from happening again. The
Commission feels the Building Department should be given a copy of the list
of historic houses. Jean Cochran suggested that someone be hired to go
over the property cards. Scott Russell said after May 1st he will have some
time to work on this. Jean Cochran said they can advertise for an intern
for the Assessors' Office. Thera is a lot of work to be done. John Greene
said that members of the Commission are willing to come there and help.
The volunteers will meet with Scott Russell on .Monday, May 1st -and will
help Scott until an intern is hired. Scott said that hopefully this could
be done by the end of summer. John Greene, said if there is ever any
question about whether a property is an historic landmark, to please call
him. Ed Forrester asked for some kind of list that could be used.

The last estimate of a new S.P.L. I.A. list was $40 -$60,000. Jean Cochran
suggested that it be put in the budget, phasing it in. Jean also told John
Greene to come in and talk to the Town Board during the budget review.
Jean also asked John if there was grant money for this and perhaps the
Town could match it.
Orient Historic District - Herb Adler will review petition with Mary Wilson.
The Landmark Preservation Commission has been given the opportunity to
sponsor 2 presentations on historic preservation and landmark legislation
by Kathy Ridley, legal counsel to the New York Preservation League. A
motion was made by Gordon Moore and seconded by Mel Phaff to ask the
Town Board for $1000.00 for the two presentations, which should cover
the costs for invitations, space and refreshments. All were in favor.
Scott Russell spoke to the Commission on the fact that there should be
historic preservation with protective legislation. 44A is a voluntary
initiative.
Old Miller's House - is owned by a person from New York. He bought it
to essentially save it. It is zoned commercial and is an historic property.
The next meeting of the Landmark Preservation Commission is scheduled
for Tuesday, May 23, 2000 at 4:00 p.m.
With no further business to -be conducted, the meeting was adjourned at
6:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Joy a M. Wilkins
