LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION MEETING
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1998
MINUTES
Present were: John Green, Herb Adler, John Stack, Ralph Williams,
Bob Kassner, Valerie Scopaz and Bill Peters.
A letter was received from the Harpers thanking the commission for
the certificate of recognition they received at the last Town Board
meeting.
The commission reviewed the Melvin and Ruth Phaff application. Bob
Kassner will check the SPLIA file on this. The commission will arrange
to inspect this house.
Bill Peters was contacted by someone who had an old house. The house
is located behind the converted potato barn on Route 25. The owners'
names are Ernst and Norton. The house is a mess. The name of this farm
was Egypt. The secretary will try to contact the owners and see when
the commission can look at the house, possibly Monday or Tuesday of
Thanksgiving week.
Bill Peters is with the Old House Society. They have just received a
grant of $125,000, which are matching funds to fix up the old house.
Bill said this house was moved to Cutchogue in 1664. lie is asking the
commission for their help. Bill will be in contact with the commission.
The house next to the North Fork Country Club will be taken down at
the end of November.
Ralph will contact Deborah Winsor to see if she wants to remain on the
commission, as she hasn't been to a meeting in a year. The commi-s-sion
felt that they need members who would be able to put in time for the
commission.

The next meeting of the commission is scheduled for Monday,
November 23, 1998 at 7:30 p.m.
The grants program was copied for the members. The commission
discussed the possibility of utilizing some of the grants for the
building next door. John Greene asked the members to look through
the list and make the appropriate contacts and get the applications
for the grants.'
The commission discussed what the strategy would be for the new Town
Board Resolution, "whEreby the Town Board. charges the Southold Town
Landmark Preservation Commission to research and gather information
about the: range of tools available from public and private sources to
preserve, protect, maintain and upgrade historic properties, information
to be presented to the Town Board in four months from the date of
this resolution." Ralph volunteered to look at the New York State
recommended law, the Greenport law and our law.
Valerie Scopaz suggested that the commission divide November, December
and January to do the research and analysis of the structures in the
SPLIA file. She also suggested our contacting Carolyn Fahey of the
Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and ask her to meet
with the commission.
With no further business to be conducted, the meeting was adjourned at
9:30 p.m.
