Box 1179 (516) 765-1801y Southold, New York 11971 SOUTHOLD TOWN LANDMARK PRESERVATION COMMISSION MEETING - TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1998 MINUTES Present were: John Green, Ralph Williams, Herb Adler, John Stack, Valerie Scopaz and Carolyn Fahey. Whitaker House - Ralph brought in a drawing of.the first floor of the house. The house was modified 4 times. The second floor could be restored for storage. The building is sound enough to be used, after it is worked on. Ralph will continue working with Tom Samuels and they will speak to Jean Cochran and give her an update. Carolyn Fahey from the Suffolk County Department of Economic Develop- ment spoke to the commission. There is a $1 .5 million grant available for downtown revitalization programs. In order for a building to qualify, it must be owned by a not-for-profit organization. Ms. Fahey will speak to the commissioner re: the revitalization of the Town Hall complex, which is located in the downtown area and also in the Historic District. She suggested putting in two applications, one to be a planning grant for the downtown area and the other to be the revitalization of Town Hall. The application would require a showing of where you are getting the matching funds. Matching funds could be from: Southold Historical Society, Transportation Committee, the Town, Chamber of Commerce, etc. Phaff House - we will try to contact him and set up an inspection after the first of the year. Strategy for Town Board Presentation: a. Review of the present landmark preservation law and make changes to qualify for Certified Local Government status. Ralph will be working on this. -z- b. Southold Historic District tax history - Herb and Bob will do this. c. Real estate tax options and programs available to Southold - John Greene will look into this. d. Possible presentation by Alison Cornish - Historic Presentation Consultant. e. Grant programs open to Southold for historic preservation - Gordon will look into this. f. Town Board involvement or action. g. Town referendum on historic preservation - John Greene will look into this.
