HomeMy WebLinkAbout08/21/2007 Southold Town Landmarks Presentation Commission August 21, 2007 Meeting Minutes Date: August 21, 2007 Time: 3:00 PM Location: Supervisor's Conference Room, Town Hall Southold, NY Attendees: Jim Grathwohl, Doug Constant, Jamie Garretson, Lary Jungblut, Mel Phaff, Ron Rossi and Barbara Schnitzler. Damon Rallis (Building Dept.) attended as the LPC Administrative Assistant. Kieran Corcoran attended part of the meeting. The July 2007 Minutes were approved. Chairman's Comments —Jim reported on the annual trip to Fishers Island and that he and Barbara met with those seeking to have Fort Wright declared a historic district. A package was given to them to complete and forward to the LPC for recommendation before sending it on to NYS officials. Jim also men- tioned that Assemblyman Marc Alessi's office may provide assistance to re- store and maintain the Southold Town "Ben Franklin Mile Markers." Barbara discussed recent developments of the Peconic Land Trust's and New Suffolk Waterfront Committee to purchase and preserve the New Suffolk Shi- pyard/Holland Submarine site in New Suffolk. Discussion also evolved on whether the US Government or US Navy could designate the facility as a Na- val Historic site. Scott Russell's suggestion that a tax break for renovations of landmark prop- erties still needs to be explored with the Assessor's office and then a formal recommendation be submitted to the Town Board. Old Business —Although the town is not required to provide a format for"de- listing" Landmarked property, it is felt that some means of a formal reply to those seeking this action is in order. Kieran is to follow-up on the redraft of the letter and how the process may proceed. Barbara received only a few comments on the "Wethersfield Handbook" and requested that all commissioners submit their comments to her within one week. Although the handbook is written for Wethersfield, it is believed that it can be edited to reflect Southold and New York law. The FY2007 budget was quickly reviewed to provide a means for recommen- dations for the FY2008 budget. Jim also asked the commissioners to con- sider new projects, i.e., awards programs, lectures, speakers, etc. =J New Business— Damon stated that he had no new applications for LPC re- view, but anticipates several being submitted within the coming month which may result in formal hearings and not simply administrative review. Doug mentioned nothing new with the VanNostrand "Tiny Orient Store" situa- tion except that it is still for sale. Mel mentioned that the foundry in Islandia who made the historic plaques for the LPC has closed up. He is aware of a few foundries which may be able to make plaques and will be visiting them in the next month. One foundry is lo- cated close to NYC. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 17, 2007 at 3:00 PM at Town Hall.
