Box 1179 Southold, NY 119971 RE: Southold Historical Society's Proposal for Markel Building Dear Mr. Russell: The Town's Landmarks Preservation Commission has reviewed the Southold Historical Society's proposal for the re-use of the Markel Building on Horton's Lane in Southold as a collections storage and exhibition center. The building was constructed in the early 1950s for the storage of farm produce. That period witnessed some of the last construction of wooden agricultural accessory buildings on local farms. Today, most are mass-produced of steel. The Commission has determined that the building qualifies for listing on the Southold Town Register of Historic Landmarks. The Commission supports the Society's proposal to work with the Town's Land Preservation Department to acquire the building. When the renovation and restoration of the building are completed, the Society will apply for its designation as a Town landmark, thus preserving this rare surviving example of our important agricultural heritage. As the Historical Society's "Proposal for Re-use of the Markel Building" states, "Both the preservation of land and the preservation and re-use of the building as a museum will have a positive economic impact on the local community." This project also confirms the fact that historic preservation is good business. The Landmark Preservation Commission urges you, the Land Preservation Committee, and the Town Board to expedite and approve the Southold Historical Society's proposal for the acquisition, restoration and re-use of the Markel building in Southold. Thank you for your consideration of this matter.
