You no doubt agree that the offshore lighthouses in Southold Town contribute significantly to our unique architectural heritage and the special quality of life we enjoy here on Long Island's historic North Fork. We would like to take this opportunity to share with you the benefits of our town's program for preserving these important landmarks. The mission of the Historic Preservation Commission, as outlined in our local preservation law, is to identify and protect structures like yours from incompatible alterations or demolition. This law ensures that alterations to a building's exterior retain its architectural integrity. Changes to the interior are not subject to the commission's jurisdiction. Once approved, the landmark designation remains with the property in perpetuity. The enclosed brochure explains the benefits of placing a landmark on Southold Town's Landmark Registry and the process for applying for a Certificate of Appropriateness when you want to alter the exterior of your building. As an added incentive, the Town of Southold offers a partial exemption from real property taxes caused by assessment increases for the restoration, alteration or rehabilitation of approved landmarks. To apply for landmark status, simply complete the enclosed application and send it to the Historic Preservation Commission at the address listed above. We will schedule a visit to your landmark; recommend that the town board approve it; and then invite you to a town board meeting to receive your official document and a plaque to place on your landmark. If you have any questions, please contact Damon Rallis, our Administrative Assistant, either at the address above,by phone 631-765-1802 or by email to dainon.rallis@town.southold.ny.us. We appreciate your anticipated interest in helping preserve the historic lighthouses of Southold Town. We hope that you will become our partner in preservation. Sincerely, James Garretson, Chair Southold Town Historic Preservation Mr. Damon Rallis Historic Preservation Commission L) a MAY 2 7 2015 Town Hall P.O. Box 1179 Southold, NY 11971 May 27, 2015 Dear Mr. Rallis, Enclosed please find the Application For Listing On The Southold Town Register Of Historic Landmarks. As per my conversation with you, I will be updating this application with additional notes and observations. I am my mom's caretaker, so getting everything done takes some time. There are some primary issues regarding the Hobart House and its upkeep that need attention. The basement underpinnings need to be reinforced and there could be some settling fo the foundation (hence the floors on both stories have settled improperly over the last two hurricanes). All the rear dormer storm windows need replacing. The - — -- — -rear-porch-also-needs-to be-readjusted-because-of-its-settling-properties.. There-is-an- -- - -- - - - original poured concrete bulkhead that needs reinforcement. This place has a place in my heart and all those who have come through it. We have done all we can to this point to maintain it and look forward to its preservation for the next 100 years. My mother has spent the better part of her life tending to the lot and she also knows this particular location should not be subject to the types of development occurring in the area. I look forward to hearing from you.
