RE: Relocating and Restoring the 1747 Lt. Moses Case House,Southold, NY
Dear Ms. Curran:
I am writing in support of the Peconic Land Trust's request for a grant from the Robert D.L. Gardiner
Foundation to move,restore and maintain the historic Lt. Moses Case House in Southold. Lt. Moses
Case(1723—1814)was active in the Southold militia during the Revolutionary War and is known as a
Patriot of the Revolution. Upon his death in 1814, he was buried in Southold.
The Lt. Moses Case House is one of Southold Town's most important landmarks. Built in 1747 in Peconic,
its distinctive double Cape Cod design is reflective of the Colonial period in which it was built. Exterior
and interior changes were begun in 1840 including a then fashionable Greek Revival style front door
with a porch and hipped roof to enhance and protect the new front entrance. Most recently, it was
moved in 1960 to its present location on Route 48 in Southold hamlet. Now empty,it is threatened with
demolition if not moved again so the site can be developed as a service station.
The Peconic Land Trust hopes to acquire the Lt. Moses Case house in 2018. Local historian Jim
Grathwohl approached the owner to explore preserving the important historical home by gifting it to a
local preservation organization.Jim is a member of the Land Trust's Project Committee as well as a
member and former chairman of the Southold Town Historic Preservation Commission. So he worked
with both organizations to develop a plan that will result in the Trust acquiring the house and relocating
it to their Agricultural Reserve on nearby Horton's Lane in Southold.
The immediate goals of the Lt. Moses Case historic project are:
• Save the historic Pre-Revolutionary home;
• Relocate it to the Land Trust's nearby Agricultural Reserve on Horton's Lane in Southold;
• Restore the architectural integrity of the home, contributing to the rural character of-the area;
• Utilize the house for Peconic Land Trust's Farms for the Future agricultural program which trains
new farmers,making the house part of a viable homestead;
• Increase public awareness of local history;
• Establish an outstanding historic site for future generations to enjoy and maintain.
The Southold Town Historic Preservation Commission members and I strongly support the Peconic Land
Trust's Lt. Moses Case House preservation project.We urge the Robert D. L. Gardiner Foundation to
fund this important project at the level requested.Thank you for your consideration of this letter and
the Land Trust's request.

A Brief History
The Man
Lieutenant Moses Luther Case(1723-1814)
Moses Luther Case was born September 9,1723 in Southold,Suffolk County,Province of New York
and died September 25, 1814 at the age of 91. He was the son of Samuel and Zeriah(Horton) Case.
Moses had(10)brothers and sisters,William Case;Joshua Case;Bethiah(Case)Bowditch; Elizabeth
(Case)Hobart;Zeviah(Case)Corwin,Sarah(Case)Youngs,Israel Case,Samuel Case,Roda Case,and
Mary(Case)Reeve. Moses married Mary(Hutchinson)Case on February 23, 1748. They had seven(7)
children Gilbert Case;Luther Case;Mary Case;Elizabeth"Betsy" (Case)Terry;Martha Case;Moses
Luther Case and Matthias Case.
Moses Luther Case was active in the Southold militia ranking as a Lieutenant during the Revolutionary
War. He became a Captain on 11/27/1775 and according to the book,"The Descendants of Thomas
Hutchinson of Southold,N.Y. 1666-1982",he signed the Articles of Association in May of 1775.
Lieutenant Moses Luther Case is recognized as a Patriot of the Revolution. Upori his death in 1814,he
was buried in his home town of Southold,New York.
The House
(Built 1747)
Built in 1747,one year before the marriage of Moses Luther Case and Mary Hutchinson and perhaps in
anticipates of their marriage,the Lt.Moses Case house is an historic Southold Town residence. It has
been situated in three different communities within the town limit. Most notably in Peconic on the
Main Road where, according to town records,Town Meetings were held.
The double cape design is reflective of the colonial period in which it was built. Exterior and interior
changes were begun c. 1840,when the front door was replaced with a then-fashionable Greek Revival
style side lighted entrance,decorated with delicate tracery over the panes. A pori h with a hipped roof
and benches was added to enhance and protect the new front entrance. The roof cornice was widened
and the end gables were modified.
Major changes that were made to the interior of the house were probably concurrent with adding the
new entrance. The original massive center chimney and fireplaces were removedI, along with the steep
front stairs. The chimneys set in the right and left bays,were each fitted with two Rumford fireplaces,
one facing front and one facing to the rear. These changes also coincided with the more prosperous
era of the 1800's after the Revolutionary war.
In addition to several locations,the house was owned over the years by several prominent North fork
families: Goodale,Terry,Appley,and King. In the 1960's owner Bill Smith moved the house from the
Main Road in Peconic to its current location on the North Road in Southold.
