Historic Preservation Commission Minutes
3:00 PM, July 17, 2018
Town Hall Annex Executive Board Room
Attendees: James Garretson, Anne Surchin, Donald Feiler, James Grathwohl, Robert Harper,
Gary Parker
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chairman Garretson.
Approval of Minutes: The minutes of June 19, 2018 were approved unanimously on a
motion by Commissioner Harper and a second by Commissioner Parker.
Chairman’s Comments
Chairman Garretson talked about the group’s boat ride to view the Plum Island
Lighthouse as part of the commission’s efforts to bring attention to its deterioration. He
said that the article would be featured in Newsday, the Suffolk Times, and on News 12.
Chairman Garretson announced that he was cancelling the regular August meeting and
would be scheduling an additional work session for the month of September.
Public Hearing
McBride, 1180 Navy Street, Orient (SCTM# 1000-25.-4-4); construction of an
accessory pergola and wood fence on a landmarked property.
o Representatives from Marshall Paetzel’s office presented the same drawings that
were presented at the previous meeting’s pre-submission conference regarding the
project.
Resolution #7.17.18.1 – Passed: Unanimous
Resolution #7.17.18.1, to approve the plans as submitted, for construction of an
accessory pergola and wood fence at 1180 Navy Street, Orient (SCTM# 1000-25.-4-4) (A
full copy of the resolution is on file in the Southold Town Building department). Mover:

Pre-Submission Conference
Peter Cook for 675 Skippers Lane, Orient (SCTM# 1000-24.-2-1); additions and
alterations to an existing single family dwelling on a landmarked property.
o Mr. Cook brought in more drawings and photos, as well as 3D renderings, at the
request of the commission.
o Commissioners questioned the plate height and whether or not it could be
lowered.
o Commissioner Grathwohl said that he was not in favor of a total teardown of the
house and questioned whether or not the original structure could be saved. The
architect said that it was not feasible.
o Commissioners agreed to take the drawings and visit the site to get a better sense
of the project.

The meeting was adjourned unanimously on a motion by Commissioner Grathwohl and a
second by Commissioner Harper.
