JAMES BUNCHUCK =� �� P.O.Box 962 SOLID WASTE COORDINATOR y 2 Cutchogue, New York 11935-0962 -` Dy� • �� Tel: (631) 734-7685 Fax: (631) 734-7976 SOUTHOLD TOWN SOLID WASTE DISTRICT 2001 ANNUAL REPORT HIGHLIGHTS GENERAL • Incoming Waste Stream of 36,391 tons,up 13%from 1999. • Recycling hit at a new high of almost 18,000 tons,up 19%increase over`99, due mostly to increased production of mulch and wood chips from yard waste • Budget of$2.9 M,comprised as follows: tax revenue,35%;fees,49%;misc.income, 16%(e.g.,sales of recyclables,grants,etc.) MSW • Shred out of Town (Trinity Contract): 9,500 tons of trash,up from 9,200 in'99 and 270 tons of C&D • Shipped in Town Garbage Bags:4,900 tons • Shipper costs to Town approx.$531,000($660,000 est.for 2001,$725,000 for 2002—NOT INCLUDING C&D) RECYCLING • Total recycling hit nearly 18,000 tons -49%-of the waste stream,both figures an all-time high; however,this figure includes over 12,000 tons of yard waste,(most of which is delivered by Town Highway vehicles); • Household Rec cly ables (i.e.,cans,galss,newspaper,etc.)comprise the rest of the recycling stream,a little over 5,000 tons: This is basically unchanged since the mid-`90s,meaning that residential recycling has leveled off,despite an increase in population and waste produced; • Recyclinj's Financial Bene its nonetheless are impressive,saving a total of approx. $350,000 in avoided disposal fees since 1991,in addition to the income it has generated. YARD WASTE • Collected a total of 12,407 tons,a full 34%of the entire waste stream(up over 2000 tons from 1998) • Produced over 13,000 yards of leaf mulch for use in the landfill cap topsoil layer, a savings of approx. $80,000 if the material had to be imported • Over 5,000 residents took advantage of the"500 lbs. free"program,making over 2,000 trips over the scale. OTHER • Landfill capping begun; at years end approx.25%of the lob is complete.
