HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/13/2014 Southold Transportation Commission Southold Town Hall May 13, 2014 Meeting Called to Order: 10:01 AM by Chairman Neb Brashich. Members Present: Councilman Bill Ruland, Highway Superintendent Vincent Orlando, Town Engineer Jamie Richter, Planning Dep't Director Heather Lanza, Police Chief Martin Flatley, Robert Feger, Margaret Brown, and Jim Baker. Minutes of April 1, 2014 A motion to approve the minutes was made, seconded and was carried. Certificates of Appreciation. Councilman Ruland presented certificates of appreciation to three Transportation Commissioners recognizing their contributions to the Town through their efforts as volunteers. Other commissioners received their certificates at the recognition function. Project Bus Stop. The commission received a well-researched document from the student project group with their results of contacting property owners where bus shelters were proposed to be located. The document included additional photographs and bus stop descriptions. The commission generally supported the students' project and proposed to reach out to the Suffolk County Dept. of Public Works (SCDPW) to check out these sites for possible inclusion in their program. Supervisor&Town Board Requests Traffic Light at Westphalia and CR 48 in Mattituck. On April 14, 2014, the commission sent a letter to SCDPW requesting they check the timing of these lights. Traffic Light at Intersection of NYS 25 and Peconic Lane. A letter was received from a citizen requesting a traffic light due to existing traffic problems at this intersection and also potential new traffic problems caused by the new brewery at this intersection. The site plan for the brewery project is currently being reviewed by the Town Planning Dept. Once this review is complete, the commission will revisit this issue and if necessary, forward a request to NYDOT to do a study for a new traffic light. Streetlight on Corner of Lighthouse Road and Soundview Ave.. Southold. A citizen reported a light on a pole near this intersection was not working and requested the Town install a new one. Preliminary investigation suggests this light does not belong to the Town. The Town will determine who it does belong to and also determine if a light is warranted at this location. Planning Board Requests No Parking on North Side of Pike Street, Mattituck. A construction project in this area has highlighted several existing parking issues, therefore Mr. Orlando proposed some new parking layouts and the commission•agreed that he should forward them to the Town Board. Current Transportation Issues Southold/Greenport Bus Shelters. See related item above. Orientation / Interpretive Siqnage Project — RBA Phase II. The second lowest bidder has been accepted and the project is proceeding towards a contract. Handicapped Parking Space, Southold Pharmacy. The Town is currently applying for a permit from NYDOT for this project and the Highway Superintendent has the materials available. NYDOT Notification of Project on NYS 25. Much of NYS 25 will be resurfaced over the next twelve months and NYDOT provided official notification of that project. The Commission recommended a summary of this notification should be posted on the Town Web Site. Old Business. None. New Business. No Through Trucks Signage in New Suffolk. Mr. Baker advised the Commission that the New Suffolk Common School Board had determined that large trucks should be prohibited from transiting King Street between New Suffolk Road and Third Street in New Suffolk. King Street is very narrow and within a school zone and a significant number of large delivery trucks transit this street throughout the day on their way to and from the restaurant on First Street. The Commission recommended the School Board write a letter to the Supervisor and also bring this issue up before the community, perhaps using the local civic association.
