Called to Order: 10:01 AM by Chairman Neb Brashich.
Members Present:
Councilman Bill Ruland, Highway Superintendent Vincent Orlando, Town Engineer Jamie
Richter, Planning Dep't Director Heather Lanza, Police Chief Martin Flatley, Robert Feger,
Margaret Brown, and Jim Baker.
Minutes of April 1, 2014
A motion to approve the minutes was made, seconded and was carried.
Certificates of Appreciation. Councilman Ruland presented certificates of appreciation to
three Transportation Commissioners recognizing their contributions to the Town through their
efforts as volunteers. Other commissioners received their certificates at the recognition function.
Project Bus Stop. The commission received a well-researched document from the student
project group with their results of contacting property owners where bus shelters were proposed
to be located. The document included additional photographs and bus stop descriptions. The
commission generally supported the students' project and proposed to reach out to the Suffolk
County Dept. of Public Works (SCDPW) to check out these sites for possible inclusion in their
program.
Supervisor&Town Board Requests
Traffic Light at Westphalia and CR 48 in Mattituck. On April 14, 2014, the commission sent a
letter to SCDPW requesting they check the timing of these lights.
Traffic Light at Intersection of NYS 25 and Peconic Lane. A letter was received from a citizen
requesting a traffic light due to existing traffic problems at this intersection and also potential
new traffic problems caused by the new brewery at this intersection. The site plan for the
brewery project is currently being reviewed by the Town Planning Dept. Once this review is
complete, the commission will revisit this issue and if necessary, forward a request to NYDOT to
do a study for a new traffic light.
Streetlight on Corner of Lighthouse Road and Soundview Ave.. Southold. A citizen reported a
light on a pole near this intersection was not working and requested the Town install a new one.
Preliminary investigation suggests this light does not belong to the Town. The Town will
determine who it does belong to and also determine if a light is warranted at this location.
Planning Board Requests
No Parking on North Side of Pike Street, Mattituck. A construction project in this area has
highlighted several existing parking issues, therefore Mr. Orlando proposed some new parking
layouts and the commission•agreed that he should forward them to the Town Board.
Current Transportation Issues
Southold/Greenport Bus Shelters. See related item above.
Orientation / Interpretive Siqnage Project — RBA Phase II. The second lowest bidder has been
accepted and the project is proceeding towards a contract.
Handicapped Parking Space, Southold Pharmacy. The Town is currently applying for a permit
from NYDOT for this project and the Highway Superintendent has the materials available.
NYDOT Notification of Project on NYS 25. Much of NYS 25 will be resurfaced over the next
twelve months and NYDOT provided official notification of that project. The Commission
recommended a summary of this notification should be posted on the Town Web Site.
Old Business. None.
New Business.
No Through Trucks Signage in New Suffolk. Mr. Baker advised the Commission that the New
Suffolk Common School Board had determined that large trucks should be prohibited from
transiting King Street between New Suffolk Road and Third Street in New Suffolk. King Street is
very narrow and within a school zone and a significant number of large delivery trucks transit
this street throughout the day on their way to and from the restaurant on First Street. The
Commission recommended the School Board write a letter to the Supervisor and also bring this
issue up before the community, perhaps using the local civic association.
