Southold Town Anti-Bias Task Force
August 20, 2018
Minutes
The meeting was called to order at 10:00.
Members Present: Marjorie Day, Susan Dingle, Leroy Heyliger, David Schultz,
Valerie Shelby, Cynthia Smith, Emily Geiger, Carolyn Peabody, Sonia Spar,
Christopher North, Eleanor Lingo,
Members Excused: Jean LePre, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci
Members Absent: Christine McFall
Guests: Lloyd Reisenberg, Dennis ______
Also Present: Chief Flatley
1. Approval of Minutes: July 17 Minutes were read and approved with
corrections.
2. Lloyd Reisenberg made a presentation about the importance of updating our
presence on the town website. How to inform people with information, pictures
etc. As webmaster, he spoke about the use of the website. Need for unified look
of pages. We can put up photos, collages with captions to keep people informed.
In the future, send to; lloyd.reisenberg@town.southold.ny.us. with captions,
information. Can link to news outlets. Also NEWS page.
He has Channel 22: MP3 Videos can be broadcast on Govt. Channel 22.
Calendar is on website but not social media.
Have Academy printing provide PDFs to post on website.
Video-conferencing with Fishers Island School? Possible webcam in conference
room.
Motion made and passed to form Sub-committee on Communication, to be
headed by Sonia Spar.
3. Feedback on Unity Picnic – Celebrating Diversity
Feedback from Peconic Landing was very positive. Shinnecock troupe was
awesome. Kudos to committee. The tent was great. Need to reach out so all feel
welcome. Impressed how many people showed up. David, Greg and John from
the town were awesome. Food was great!

In the Future: Signs denoting where food came from.
Interactions improving: thanks to the ukulele orchestra! The Boy Scouts were
amazing!
Motion made and passed that next year the picnic be held on August 3.
Next: Mattiuck FD has a grill we can use.
Certificates of Recognition will be available at the next meeting.
Thank you letters: Ukelele Orchestra, Shinnecock Troupe, Boy Scouts, letter to
Jeff Standish acknowledging David, Greg and John.
3. Helen W. Prince Community Award (taking place near October 5, UN World
th
Teachers Day) 4 annual presentation.
Meeting August 15 at Mattituck Senior Center. Georgette Key, Professor
at Nassau Community College, agreed to keynote. Sonia reported that Fisher
Island School will be contributing artwork.
Award to advocates for community education, not necessarily a teacher. We
reviewed the qualifications for the award:
Community award to honor members of community who promote diversity,
unity and fairness in our town.
Motion made and passed that this year we have two award recipients, one for an
emerging leader and for an established leader: Brian Mealey and Sara Benjamin
will be this year’s recipients.
Committee will meet Monday August 27 @10:30 at St. Agnes, with Social Justice
Sub-Committee to follow.
Motion made and passed that event will be held at a school this year, with
decision whether Southold or Greenport to be made at the next sub-committee
meeting, on Wednesday August 22.
5. Reports:
a. Police Department: Strawberry Fields scam artist. Leroy had reported
to Chief Flatley, who is investigating with security provided by Lions Club. Chief
Flatley reported that yesterday at Greek Orthodox church on Main and Sterling,
an incident of a broken window and criminal mischief, not known if bias-related.
b. Schools: Oysterponds—no report

Southold— David Gamberg praised by Diane Ravitch in blog
for article in Education week about community values
New Suffolk— no report
Mattituck—Aug. 16 meeting: “Best Buddies” program, from
Leadership conference, to befriend vulnerable kids;
Joe Pinto, Eagle Scout with project at cemetery;

Rec’d grant to teach Spanish as 2 Language
for pre-K to 6, new superintendent welcomed
Fishers Island—Sonia visited and established relationship
with Principal, engaging with students for artwork
for Helen Prince Award.
6. New Business:
a. Budget for 2019 presented: Will add $ for increased needs. Will add
$600.
b. Social Justice Subcommittee (no report)
c. ABTF Brochure and Informational materials in progress.
d. Support groups for minorities to be discussed at next meeting.
e. For next time: Reports that Southold Fire Department exhibits bias
against Latinos.
Following a motion and second, the meeting was adjourned.
