The Board of peals
Town of Southo d
Greenport, N.Y. 11944
Gentlemen:
We have been made aware of the intent, on the part of
the Old Oyster Factory Restaurant, to apply for permission
to erect a directional sign on the South side of Route 25
approximately 150 ' west of the Seagull Nest Restaurant,
and we wish to register our protest against the erection
of such a sign.
We see no reason why the view from our windows should
be dominated by a sign for a commercial establishment some
10 miles distant from our homes. It is our understanding
that the ordinance regulating the placing of commercial
signs was designed to preserve the appearance of our Town.
We feel we are entitled to the ordinance 's protection for
the preservation of the appearance of our neighborhood.
Sincerely yours, -- oo

Southold, New York 11971
Gentlemen: T
This is in reference to a petition of the Old Oyster Factory
Restaurant to erect a sign on a lot adjacent to property owned by
myself and my family.
I have no objection to the location of one sign in that general
area, But, I can't help wondering if it will stop at that. There are
hardly any signs whatsoever on the south side of the road between
Mattituck and Cutchogue. If one Greenport restaurant is allowed to place
a sign there, why should there be any limit on any other restaurant on
the North Fork doing the same? In fact, it would seem unfair to the
others not to be allowed to advertise in a similar fashion. I sympathize
with any co¢mercial establishment that is not located on one of the major
by-ways such as Route 25. Exceptions should be granted to at least enable
them to provide directional signs on the Main Road. But it is my opinion
those exceptions should be limited.
If the above-mentioned sign falls within that philosophy, then I
have no objection. But if it is the beginning of the desecration of our
countryside, then I am of an entirely different opinion.
Very t 1 yo s,
WJB/s William J. Baxter
