Dear Mr. Goehringar~
As per your request~ an assessment of the project for GHRISTIAN SAIxMTNEN .
Appeal No. 3622 (variance) has been conducted.
During a site inspection on April l~ 1987 it was noted that the proposed deck would
terminate at the top edge of a steep bank above East Marion Lake. This bank has m
fair amount of indigenous woody vegetation growing on it. However~ a large amount
o~ debris consisting mostly of branches and leaves has been disposed of on the face
o~the ba~k. The lower portion or toe of the bank is much flatter and has cattails
hvragmites communis) growing on it. Soils at the site are mapped as Carver and
r~mouth Sands with 15 35 percent slopes.
Gonstruction of the deck will slightly increase surface water runoff; however~ due
to the sandy soils this should not create any problems. Placement of 4 x 4 posts
and possible concrete'around them~ could create problems if they are located too
clgse to the ~gp .~dge of the bank. I rec~end a minimum 4 [four) foot setback
Construction of the stairs leading down to the lake will create problems with soil
erosion by removal of existing vegetation and impeding establishment of new vege-
tation due to shade. Terracing under the stairs would alleviate the soil erosion.
A planting plan regarding the selection of vegetation for t_he bank could be provided
by this office upon the landowner~s request.
Existfing debris on the bank should be removed. This material will destroy any
ex~sting vegetation below it and also adds excessive weight onto the bank.
In reference to an unrelated matter~ the deck plan does not show a railing around
the deck. Due to the steepness of the bank, a railing along the outer edge of the
deck should be constructed.
I hope this information will be beneficial to you.
