The First Universalist Church of Southold was
founded by a group of liberal residents who met at
the Inn of William D. Cochran in October of 1835. At
that time they decided to erect a building, 35 X 48
feet, file a constitution with the town clerk, rent
pews, and engage Mr. Cochran to build the "house
with an end gallery only."Since that time the church
has served people from Riverhead to Orient in the
spirit of liberal religion. There has never been a
creedal test required to join the church, which is now
a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Association.
The interior of the church was remodeled in 1879,
1926,and again in 1935 for its centennial observance.
The outside of the church has remained the same
through the years. The parsonage was built in 1902
and the Parish Hall in 1910. The ministers, members
and friends of the church have been active in the
community, living out their ideals of liberal religion
and helping to make the North Fork a good home
where all can live with freedom, dignity, and in the
open search for truth.
