At that time, I was informed that there had been a law suit brought on by the LI Pine Barrens to challenge the authority of the Farmland Preservation Committee to issue event permits. Based on this bit of information, we changed plans and moved the event to another property where the development rights had not been sold. Last night, I received a call from Andrew Amakawa of the Suffolk County Planning Dept. He informed me that there is a new process that makes approval possible. It's not a permit process per se, but it is one that would allow us to have the event in the same location that we have had it for the past 8 years. We would really like to continue having this event in Southold; so, on the off chance that it may get approval, I'm submitting this application. I know that I'm short of the 60 business days, but hope that as this is an event you have approved in the past that you will forgive this tardiness and grant approval. As this is an event that has been approved multiple times in the past by the committee, I am told that it will be reviewed by the staff instead of going to the full committee. I expect that this approval will come in more quickly than in the past. I know that you have a 60 day filing deadline for event applications and didn't want to be late. As soon as I receive this approval, I will send it in. In addition, in the past, you have asked for a letter from the Keil family showing their approval of our use of their adjacent field for parking. I'm not sure if that is still a requirement, but have sent them the request for their approval. As soon as I receive that approval I will also send that along to you. If you need anything further, please do not hesitate to contact me vial email or phone. The event is designed to be low-impact to the property, while literally placing the participants in the middle of their food source. Last year's event pulled together the largest number of farms & producers than ever before — Andrews Family Farm, Braun Seafood, Crescent Duck Farm, Feisty Acres Farm, Harvest Moon Shellfish Co, North Fork Flower Farm, North Fork Roasting Co, W & K Farms, & Zilnicki Farms. In the past, I have appeared before the Farmland Preservation Committee to secure permission to hold this event, but I understand that the process has no changed and it is less a permit process as a review to see if the event is compliant with the intent of the deed. So in that vein, I'm including the attached information for your review. I'm available by cell and email if you need further information. I can also be available to meet in person should that be necessary. Best,. Local Chefs Stephan Bogardus & Claudia Fleming, North Fork Table & Inn, create a seasonal menu featuring local ingredients and paired with Lenz wine. We then literally place the people in the middle of the farm where the grapes that made the wine they are drinking with dinner are grown. We have chosen a portion of the field that is far enough away from the main road and away from other buildings to further insulate them from everything but the land from which their food comes. EDUCATIONAL ELEMENTS OF THE EVENT ■ Vineyard Tour focuses on changes in vineyard practices over the years, things we have learned through collaboration with other vineyard managers and Alice Wise, trellis systems, sustainable vs. organic farming practices, basic terminology (veraison, spur pruning, etc), and the dance that happens each harvest between the vineyard manager who wants to bring the crop in and the winemaker who wants to have the grape hang just a little bit longer. ■ So much focus is placed on the winery part of our identity that it is often overlooked that we are a FARM winery. This event literally places the guests within the context of their food and wine. ■ Ingredients for the dinner are sourced from local farms, fisheries, poultry farms, etc. ■ Seasonal Menu — in general people have no idea what is available seasonally. With supermarkets and refrigerated trucks we think nothing of having strawberries in December. Seasonal is the ultimate example of what it means to be a locavore! PO BOX 28 PECONIC,NY 11958 631.734.6010 IMPACT TO PROPERTY The event is designed to have a very limited impact on the property: ■ For parking, we use our neighbor's field — Otto Kiel, owner —field just adjacent to the west of our property. Insurance certificate & owner permission letters attached. ■ Guests walk along the tractor paths, not in between the vines (except for during the vineyard tour portion of the evening). ■ Table is set up in the clearing between vineyard blocks ■ Table is one long continuous farm-style table — idea is to mimic a farm picnic ■ Small kitchen area is set up in another small clearing alongside the tractor path. EVENT SCHEDULE 5:00pm: Guests arrive at The Lenz Winery and are served a glass of the Lenz Cuvee (sparkling wine). 5:30pm: The group is separated into 4 sections and each begins their vineyard tour. The sections are led by Sam McCullough, Lenz Vineyard Manager; Eric Fry, Lenz Winemaker; Thomas Spotteck, Lenz Assistant Winemaker & Oenologist; and Peter J. Carroll, Lenz owner. The tour then ends at the dinner table. 6:15pm: Dinner begins. Courses and Wines presented by Chef Stephan Bogardus, Claudia Fleming, & Winemaker Eric Fry. 8:00pm: Guests return to the Lenz Tasting Room for coffee and tea from North Fork Coffee Roasting Co. to end the evening. ,P J-ak RECEIVEC ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS PO BOX 28 PECONIC,NY 11958 631.734.6010 i •. ., Lam, '' e Kitchen ,,Farm Table y I IN 38355 NY-25 h 1 Cars Enter Parking ( t eart" • I / " Toilets, „ d a , Kitchen` ti W 3.8355.,NY.-25 ,,, ookIc earth • I I h \ Im 4 Z. h 4 Cars Enter , „Parking ' ` Cars Fxit Google earth • :• • 0 • LENZ 3 ? , NORTH PORK RECETVEE L ON G IS L AND JUL. .IJI1 2017 DINNER IN THE VINES ZONING BOA-RD OF APPEALS Contact : Dorothy-Dean Thomas Address: The Lenz Winery PO Box 28 Peconic, NY 11958 Phone: 631.734.6010 Cell: 631.816.0399 Agricultural Peter J.
