DISCUSSION OF VARIOUS PERSPECTIVES OF TOWN PRESERVATION PROGRAM
Chairman Sam McCullough led discussion on various perspectives of the Town’s Farmland Preservation
Program:
1) To protect farmland and thus farming as a component of the character of our community.
2) Decrease residential density.
3) There is a misconception among the public that farmland preservation equals open space
preservation, prohibiting agricultural building to preserve views.
4) Many in the farming community believe that farmland preservation should only restrict the right to
subdivide land and build houses. All other uses allowed under zoning should remain with the
property.
Chris Baiz, local vineyard owner and Chairman of Southold Town’s Agricultural Advisory Committee,
suggested LPC recommend to the Town Board that changes be made to the Town Code to let Town buy
all development rights on a farm but allow a Farm Homestead, ag production, etc. on Town preserved
lands to keep farms viable for the future of farming.
Land Preservation Coordinator Melissa Spiro presented information on Town Easements that were
specific to scenic restrictions and/or lowered lot coverage restrictions.
Adjournment:
MOTION made by Eric Keil, seconded by Sam McCullough, to adjourn this meeting.
Motion carried: 7/0
The meeting ended at 8:40 p.m. with seven LPC members in attendance.
Respectfully submitted by Melanie Doroski, Land Preservation Secretary
