Box 1179 Southold, New York 11971 ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE FINAL MINUTES Committee Meeting January 8, 2018 The meeting was called to order at 10:18 a.m. by Co-Chairperson, Valerie Shelby. Members Present were: Susan Dingle, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci, LeRoy Heyliger, Jean LePre, Eleanor Lingo, Christopher North, Carolyn Peabody, Linda Ruland, David Schultz, Valerie Shelby and Cynthia Smith and Sonia Spar. Members Absent: Marjorie Day and Nydia Portillo Palencia Also present was William Ruland, Liaison from the Town Board. There were no guests present. Minutes: Motion was made by Susan Dingle and seconded by Jeanne LePre to accept the December 2017 meeting minutes with the following two corrections: 1)DACA should be spelled DASA. 2) In the section titled, “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Celebration” the third sentence should read, “An honorarium will be given to the speaker.” The motion carried. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Celebration: Plans are almost finalized for the MLK Memorial Celebration to be th held on Sunday, January 14 at 4 pm at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Route 25, Greenport. Food has been ordered (Finger Foods, wraps, macaroni salad, cole slaw, fruit platter, veggie platter and cookies. Eleanor will purchase the plates and utensils. Linda will provide the tablecloths. Loretta will purchase the water. Sonia will take care of the program. A th meeting will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 10:30 am.at St. Agnes Church to finalize the details for the event. Anti-Bullying Training- Sonia shared that the Shelter Island School District held a Peer-to-Peer anti-Bullying Training and it was very successful. Sonia has been in touch with the ADL and the North Fork Schools to hold one on the North Fork with Greenport, Southold and Mattituck schools combined. It would be held for 3 consecutive Fridays in late February and early March. Carolyn made a motion, and Christopher seconded it, to authorize $2000.00 from the 2017 ABTF budget to help pay for this training. The motion carried. The school districts would have to come up with the other funds ($4000.00 total needed). Sophomores and juniors would mainly by the students participating in these trainings and a certificate would be given to all participants completing the training. It was mentioned that B.O.C.E.C. would be a part of it, too. Budget- Sonia reported that the ABTF has a budget of $5300.00 for 2018, $800.00 to be used for honorarium. Respect and Civility Campaign – Sonja will look into bumper stickers/magnets. DASA Report – The chair reminded the school liaisons to ask for a copy of their respective school’s DASA report. If they are not forthcoming with it, the ABTF will write a letter to the school district asking for it. If they still do not share a copy of it with ABTF committee, the ABTF committee will then write a letter to the State Education Department in Albany requesting the same. School Reports- Greenport- Cindy handed in the DASA report from Greenport School. David Gamberg will be invited to come in and discuss it with the committee. Mattituck-Dr. Anne Smith followed up on the wrestling incident reported by LeRoy Heyliger to the ABTF committee last month. Chief Flatley was also contacted. LeRoy requested the Mattituck-Cutchogue’s DASA report from Dr. Anne Smith. She will send it to Sonia Spar. Sonia commented on the Cultural Awareness Committee. New Business- Valerie invited the committee to an Interfaith Multi-Cultural Program consisting of all choirs in Commack thth on January 14 from 7 to 9 pm. Sonia is speaking at the Universalist Church Service on January 14. It was suggested that a “Dreamer” come to the next ABTF and share their plight with the committee. Motion was made by Christopher North and seconded by Carolyn Peabody to adjourn the meeting. The motion carried and the meeting was adjourned at 12:03 pm. Respectfully submitted, Linda Ruland
