HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/12/2018 RECEIVED FEB 21 ")1I Town of Southold Southold Town Clod-, ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE Draft Minutes Committee Meeting/February 12, 2018 Members Present: Marjorie Day,Jean Le'Pre, Eleanor Lingo, David Shultz,Valerie Shelby,Cindy Smith and Sonia Spar. Members Absent: Susan Dingle, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci, Carolyn Peabody, and Linda Ruland Also Present: Denis Nonacarrow(Liason/Town of Southold), Chief Martin Flatley and Guest Gary Osborne as well as Kelly Zegers(Suffolk times), Lucius Ware (ELI NAACP) The meeting opened at 10:15. We are not able to make motions or vote today as there is not a quorum. Documents from the East End Beacon and the Independent were shared concerning events of interest including our last MLK celebration and Peconic Landing Black History. MARTIN LUTHER KING EVENT-A notation is made that the accessibility to the Lutheran Church in Greenport is very nice. They have offered their space again if we would like to have our event there again next year. PEER TO PEER TRAINING UPDATE: Sonia reports she has checked on the budget and has found that the funding does not roll over from year to year. We must work form our current budget of$5,300. $500 was already allocated for MLK.Therefore;the idea of ABTF contributing$2,000 from its budget is less likely to pay for the training to be done by the ADL at$4,000. Discussion suggests that maybe we could use$1,000 from our budget,$1,000 from MLK,and then $1.000 each from BOCES and Schools. The schools will need to identify 3 days(Fridays)and transportation to be provided by them. SYNERGY: Former date needs to be changed as the date is coming quickly and the committee feels it needs more time to communicate and plan the event. Budget will be reviewed to consider both this event and Helen Prince Award. There is discussion about chosen venue and the fact that the turnout in Greenport was significantly higher and it may be a good idea to follow up with those folks maybe at the library or St Agnes? RESPECT AND CIVILITY CAM PAIGN/GREENPORT BLOCK PARTY; Proposed date is June 3, 2018; rain date June 10. ABTF would like to review with the village committee what is their intent?, and coordination efforts need to be clarified. POLICE REPORT: Greenport parents have a concern about the lack of respect shown by male students toward female students. As a result the school contacted the police and they have been doing class presentations to High School students re:the issue. The ABTF has a discussion about taking this opportunity to do a town meeting to offer strategies to help with bullying in the future. Gary Osborne (guest/Sag Harbor teacher and Southold town resident)suggests that having a panel that have experienced bullying may facilitate more feedback.
