Lombard, 26 Federal Plaza, Ne~¢ York~ N.Y. 10007 Subject: East Coast Mines, Inc.~ Quogue, L.I., N.Y. Sir: Regarding the proposed plan for the dredging operation near the mouth of Mattituck Inlet for the leading of barges, the undersigned stron91~ opposes this heavy-duty freighting which is scheduled to Go on for 20 years. A serious traffic hazard afloat. The present Gotham barges already with their double parking in the narrow inlet is a hazard to the hu~ldreds of pleasure boats using the Mattituck Inlet. It will cause a traffic hazard ashore. The only route the trucks can fellow fre~a Sound Avenue to the dock side are either Cox Neck Rd and Mill Road or Bergen Avenue. These roads a~-e built for passsnger traffic in a residential neighberhoed~ they were never constrected to accomodate heav~ trucking. Cost of roads. All of $outhold Town taxpayers ,will have to pay to rebuild reads~ since the present roads cannot stand up to the heavy trucking necessar~ for the proposed operations. We believe this trucking and barging will bring nothing to Mattituck except noise~ dan~e,r~ e~ense~ and loss of revenue for the pleasure boat business. I~ must be stopped now. We would amk that a local public hearin~ be held~so that we all may know 'what is going on~ Yours ~ruly~ KI&us ~eier ( .COPY: FOR SOUTHOLB TOW~ BOARD OF TRUSTEES SOUTHOLD, N. State Department of Enviror~ental Conservation Stony Brook, N. Y. Dear ~. Colvin: Last M~y you published a Notice of Application in the local papers, referring to plans by East Coast M~nes, inc., to construct dolphins and ~o dredge an area in ~ttituck Creek. At that time our chapter of National Audubon Society saw no direct or immediate threat to tha environment nor to good conservation proceedures. However, there appears to be a growing tendency to bludgeon away at the once beautiful creek and its surroundings, and one wonders where it will all end° The aesthetics at this point near the envrance to thesound have been perm,~mnently damaged by commercial interests blind ~o the comfort and s~rroundings of residents. N~ effective ~straints or caution has been shown by town or counoy officials. The olans of East~ Coast Mdnes, Znc., appear to threaten further decline of the environment here, in and adjacent vo the operation itself. I~o' has jurisdiction here? Is the Army Corps of Engineers involved? Can we look for help from the Trustees or Town Board of Southold Town? Acres of living wetlands lie just across the creek from this growing industrial comple~ the navigable wa~ers menaced by ear~h-moving equipment/the former serenity of the waterway destroyed. Can you assure us that the wetlands here are guarded, and that the word and spirit of laws.are being respected? Can we have some assurance from the Department of Environmental Con- servation that the people of the North Fork need not fear that the remaining advantages of the creek will diminish? %% would appreciate a word from your office, and we assure you of our dedication to promoting the interest~ of environmental conservation.
