Ladies and Gentlemen, Southold Town Clerk
Please don't cave in to more progress. Several town executives are meeting to discuss
the Southold town's traffic problems. Southold town should do the following...
A. ELIMINATE THE CONCERTS:
These concerts attract:
broken bottles/glass, beer cans on roads and lawns
buses
drunken driving
limousines+airport limousines
loud, noisy music
marijuana and drug abuse
pedestrians walking into traffic
public lewdness
taxis
unlawful concert goers
on Sound Avenue.
Southold town roads, can't support this new, additional traffic congestion.
Also, concerts trigger drunken driving and drug abuse. As a result, these
concerts menace the local communities and roadways.
B. RESTRICT ROADS BY VEHICLE TYPE:
For example, our state parkways, like:
Northern& Southern State
Sagitgos
Sunken Meadow
restrict vehicle types using these roads. To illustrate, trucks and buses are too big for
parkway road lanes and bridge underpasses.
Likewise, Southold town should ban:
airport limos
other limousines
tour buses
taxis trucks
from our local roads. These vehicles are too large- and their drivers are dangerous.
C. SHUT DOWN THE FERRY SERVICE:
Each year, the Orient ferry dumps increasing amounts of motor vehicles on
Southold town roads. In fact, Orient ferry traffic literally backs up into to East Marion -
often.
As a result, this"boat" motorist traffic has gotten so bad, our local taxpayers do
not have easy road access any more.
Worse yet,the Orient ferry company wants to use ADDITIONAL ferries.
Already,this company is under-regulated.
What if an ambulance, or other emergency vehicle, needs to get by? Where do
they go? This town only has 2 main roads- and they both get clogged.
D. AiEBOGUE FIRJ, DEPARTMENT'S BOOT DRIVE:
This fire department's boot drive shows their lack of common sense.
Their menacing drive holds up traffic for miles.
First, these firemen walk up to passing motorists-to get them to put money into
their smelly boots. Also, this is a health issue.
Secondly, they endanger themselves by walking into moving traffic.
Consequently, the unsuspecting driver(s) could hit 1 of the beggars. If the
firemen get injured, they may sue the driver.
Worse yet,the motorist may swerve into other cars to avoid these annoying
panhandlers.
E. MORATORIUMS ON VACANT LAND CONSTRUCTION:
Please use them. For example, Vermont has vacant land moratoriums. These
citizens became tired of local urbanization. It caused:
apartments occupied by illegal immigrants
hazardous roads
higher crime rates (like Riverhead)
hospital overcrowding
loss of vacant land, lots, and farmland
massive development projects
mini mansions on small lots
more car pollution
noisy surroundings
out of control urbanization
overcrowded municipal parking lots
overloaded, smelly landfills (like Brookhaven town)
rise in crime
tax increases for: social services and new.schools
traffic congestion
unwanted industry
youth gangs.
Please follow Vermont's example.
F. NO HIGH DENSITY HOUSING:
Apartments, condos, shopping are the evils of western Suffolk County. Many
times, like in Patchogue and Shirley, greedy developers will push for"affordable"
housing. Affordable housing is apartments, condos, etc.
In the end, once the"affordable" housing was built, it was NOT affordable.
Their progress-happy politicians lied.
Finally, any leftover vacant units were subject to section 8 occupants.
Don't approve it here.
Instead, any foreclosed homes could go into a lottery for lucky contest entrants.
G. TAS; INCENTIVES IVES/LAND GRAFTS:
Our nice town could give tax incentives for people to buy homes needing
renovation, instead of building new houses.
Also, tax rewards could be given to:
farmers
oversized lot owners
vacant land owners
to help prevent open space development and subdividing.
Finally, Southold town could apply for land grant funding from:
federal
state
county
governments to help preserve local vacant lands.
H. DISCOURAGE TOURISM:
It will turn Southold town into another Hampton. During non-winter months, the
Hamptons are victimized by:
buses
crime
disorderly conduct
dramatic rise in living costs
drunkenness
farm/vacant lands lost
littering-on private&public property
more taxes- for road repairs
motorcycles
obnoxious tourists
over active real estate development
oversized limos
public lewdness
public road drag racing
quality of life lost
reckless drivers
substance abuse
teenage loitering- day and night
too many trucks
traffic jams
unsafe road conditions
unsafe schools
vandalism
very loud rock concerts
wild parties.
For example, remember when drunk driver Lizzie Grubman ran over 15 people in her
Mercedes SUV at a Southampton bar? If Southold town curbs tourism and development, we can
avoid situations like this- and on the above list.
Just listen to WLNG's 92.1 FM local morning news cast. The reporters announce many,
many daily incidents, similar to the 1 above, that disrupt the serene quality of life we enjoy.
Who wants this chaos on the north fork? Keep it in Riverhead and Southampton towns.
Those towns are like 1 big animal house. We don't need it here.
Thank you for your time,
