ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE
MINUTES
COMMITTEE MEETING

September 18, 2017
The meeting was called to order at 10:06 by Co-chairman, Valerie Shelby.
Members present were Susan Dingle, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci, LeRoy Heyliger, Christopher North, Carolyn Peabody, Nydia
Portillo Palencia, Linda Ruland, David Schultz, Valerie Shelby and Cynthia Smith.
Members excused were Marjorie Day, Eleanor Lingo and Sonia Spar.
Guests present were Thomas Byrne, Veronica Kaliski and William Flinter.

1)Loretta moved and Chris seconded that the minutes of the August 21, 2017 be accepted with the following two
corrections: 1)In Item 7-David Schultz did not offer to co-ordinate with all the East End Anti-Bias Task Forces to have a
joint meeting in November. 2) In the Fisher’s Island School Report - The words “…are from Connecticut and pay tuition.”
be inserted in the last sentence of the Fisher’s Island report.

2) Valerie will tell Dennis that the date for next year’s Unity Picnic will be August 11, 2018.
3) Helen Prince Award – The committee chose Dr. Anne Smith, Supt. of Mattituck-Cutchogue UFSD, to be this year’s

recipient of the Helen Prince Award. The ceremony will take place on October 5 at 6 pm at the Cutchogue East
Elementary School Library. Steve Wick, editor at The Suffolk Times, will be the guest speaker. We will serve finger foods.
4) Respect and Civility Campaign- It was decided that it is important for us to not lose momentum on our Respect and
Civility Campaign.
5) Report on DACA – It was “awesome” and “very well attended”. A workshop entitled, “You Are Not Alone” will be held on

September 18 at 4-6 pm at St. Agnes Church in Greenport.
6) Reports-
Police Department-None
Schools- Southold- The Southold Board Meetings conflict with David’s night classes.
Mattituck- LeRoy reported that he asked about the Dignity Act and was told they would get back to him
on it. The committee agreed that each school representative should ask about the status of
the Dignity Act’s annual report at the next school board meeting they attend. Also he reported
that the school was working to reinstate its Diversity Committee.
7) New Business- A discussion was held on how to treat people who have dissenting opinions. The committee also talked
about instituting a Service Award for students who work to promote diversity. More discussion to follow. Loretta needs one
more book for the school library. Sonia will order one.

The next committee meeting for planning the Helen Prince Award night will be on September 20 at 10 am at St. Agnes
Church in Greenport.
A motion to adjourn was made by Chris North and seconded by David Schultz. The motion carried and the meeting was
adjourned at 11:32 am.
