ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE
FINAL MINUTES
COMMITTEE MEETING
November 20, 2017
The meeting was called to order at 10:15 am by Co-chairperson, Valerie Shelby.
Members present were: Valerie Shelby, Cindy Smith, Jean LePre, Eleanor Lingo, Christopher North,
Linda Ruland, David Schultz. There was no quorum so no official business was conducted.
Members excused were Marjorie Day, Susan Dingle, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci, LeRoy Heyliger, Carolyn
Peabody, Nydia Palencia, and Sonia Spar.
Guests present were William Ruland, Liaison from the Town Board and Chief Flatley, Representative
from the Southold Town Police Department.
There were no guests.
1) The minutes were read but the voting to accept them was tabled to December’s meeting.
2) Bill Ruland will check into the status of the empty seat on the committee.
3) Eleanor confirmed the picnic with the Town’s Recreation Department.
4) Chris will speak with Rev.Garrett Johnson to have the Dr. Martin Luther King celebration at his
church.
5) The North Fork Unity Committee, which is an informational committee working parallel with the
ABTF, is meeting with the Riverhead ABTF (Lawyer Mr. Barrington and Elaine Gross) and they
want our committee to joining them. They want to hold a training to teach conflict resolution,
how to talk without confrontation. It was encouraged for our members to be involved.
Police Report: Chief Flatley reported that he and Chris North have been talking about the next
SYNERGY event. A tentative date was set for January 25, 2018. Chris will confirm this date with
Professor Banks. He also suggested that local businesses be asked to donate gift cards which police
officers would give to youth they see doing a good deed. Valerie asked Chief Flatley what can be
done re: school shootings. The chief explained that schools are mandated by the state to have lock-
downs and they are all preparing for this scenario.
School Reports:
Greenport- Chris North reported that they are getting the DACA report ready. Cindy Smith reported
that Greenport needs more substitute teachers.
Mattituck- Mattituck School is slowly getting their DACA report to us.
David Schultz shared about an organization, St. Louis Story Stitchers. He will tell us more next
month.
David made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Chris seconded it. The meeting was adjourned at 11:18
am.
