April 17, 2017
The April meeting was called to order at 10:07 am.
Members present were Marjorie Day, Jean LePre’, Eleanor Lingo, Carolyn Peabody, Linda Ruland, Cynthia Smith and
Sonia Spar. This did not constitute a quorum so some items will have to be voted on again next month.
Members excused were LeRoy Heyliger, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci, Christopher North, Valerie Shelby and Susan Dingle.
Members absent were Nydia Portillo and Louis Hug.
Chief Flatley from the Southold Town Police Department and William Ruland, Liaison from Town Board were also present.

The minutes from February 21, 2107 were read. Motion was made by Carolyn Peabody and seconded by Eleanor Lingo
to accept the minutes with the following corrections: Christopher North and David Schultz were also present. The motion
carried.
1) Debra Riva sent a letter of resignation from the ABTF committee. William Ruland will take care of the resignation
and finding out from the Town Board about filling her vacancy. Discussion followed concerning Louise Hug, a
member whom we have not heard from in months. After several attempts to contact her by regular mail, e-mails
and personal visits, it was decided that Bill Ruland will make a recommendation to the Town Board to remove
Louise Hug from the committee.
th
2) Mattituck Synergy Event- April 6- low attendance but good conversations. One suggestion was to put information
re: immigrants on the town website and to have future discussions on immigration. Discussion followed and the
committee was reminded that policies on immigration are not a task of the ABTF Committee. However, the ABTF
is interested in the human aspect of immigration issues and its effect on human lives.
3) An issue was bought up concerning an ABTF committee member initiating an event designating it as an ABTF
event. Committee members were reminded that they may write letters from themselves, but not as an ABTF
committee member unless authorized to do so by the committee. It was suggested that procedures by outlined
and set in place as to how to create an event, etc. A committee needs to be sent in place to accomplish this task.
4) Marjorie Day and Linda Ruland will work on communication.
5) Carolyn Peabody made a motion to have an Immigration Event. Marjorie Day seconded it. The motion carried. It
was discussed that we should sponsor two immigration events per year and more if needed.
6) Doug Roberts, Trustee from the Town of Greenport, would like to have more synergy events. Synergy events are
between the police department and the community. A letter in response to his request will be sent.
7) The Respect and Civility Campaign was discussed. Ink Spot prices were very high. We will look for an outside
vendor. It is hoped that the ABTF can collaborate with the schools on this campaign.
8) The books that the committee bought for our local schools’ libraries will be taken to the respective board
meetings. A letter will be drafted to accompany them when presented.
9) Police Department had no report.
10) Greenport School report- The Special Education Department is being reviewed by the state.
11) Discussion was held on the matter of having religious groups singing at the picnic.
12) The question of voting by email was discussed. Bill Ruland will talk with the Town Attorney about this.
13) The committee congratulated Eleanor Lingo for being named Suffolk County’s Senior of the Year. A celebration
th
will be held on May 16 at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook.
th
