This Regular Meeting of the Southold Town Tree Committee was called to order at 7:00 PM at
the Southold Town Annex.
Minutes from the September 27, 2017 meeting were approved.
Discussion Items:
1. Linda Carlson of Bridgehampton National Bank attended the meeting and presented
the Committee with a donation check in the amount of$1,000. in recognition of the
diseased Beech tree which had to be taken down on the bank property. The check
was to be deposited into the Committee's "Donations" account.
2. Discussion was then had regarding what may be the problem with the "oldest"tree in
Southold Town — the Tulip tree located behind Bank of America. The committee
may look to an arborist for some advice and information on how to help the tree.
3. Discussion was had relative to the trees behind Town Hall as per a preliminary plan
to take some trees down to create more parking. The Committee will investigate and
give their recommendations on the cutting down of these trees.
4. Dave will speak to Town Accounting Dept. to see how much money is now in the
Committee's two (2) accounts, and determine how much we can spend toward tree
planting.
5. Peg Murphy will speak to Mark Terry to inquire about applying for a special grant.
6. Dave anticipates that the Committee will be planting about 75-100 new trees this year
and hopes to be completed with the plantings by the very end of November. We
reviewed our 2017 planting site list and discussed some of the locations and the types
of trees that are suitable for those locations. The list was passed out to the members
for further discussion amongst them. There are presently about 82 trees to stake and
locate. Dave will send out for bids on the planting to three reputable contractors.
Members hope to start staking on November 5, 2017.
7. Jay Jansen reported that the DEC is willing to speak to us about Oak Wilt. John
Wernet, Supervising Forester, Division of Lands & Forest may attend one of our next
scheduled meetings.
The next meeting of the Tree Committee will be December 20, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in
the Town Annex Board Room.
This meeting was adjourned at 8:10 PM
Respectfully submitted,
