HORTENSE MILLS JEFFERSON:
Wayland Jefferson’s first wife was Sarah E. Owens of North Carolina. Both
single, he was 28 and a student, while she was 25 and a servant in the
household of Jeremiah Tuthill. They were married in Brooklyn in 1909.
Much later Wayland Jefferson married Hortense Mills who was a beautician
from Orlando, Florida. The couple was married on November 16, 1960 at
the Presbyterian Church in Southampton. Wayland Jefferson was then
retired at the age of 76 and Hortense was age 31. They lived at 506 Fifth
Street in Greenport. The marriage was brief. Jefferson had been operated on
for throat cancer, and died on December 20, 1961.
