ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE
FINAL MINUTES
COMMITTEE MEETING
August 21, 2017
The meeting was called to order at 10:05 am by Co-chairpersons, Sonia Spar and Valerie Shelby.
Members present were Susan Dingle, LeRoy Heyliger, Eleanor Lingo, Linda Ruland, David Schultz,
Valerie Shelby and Sonia Spar. Denis Noncarrow, Liaison from Supervisor’s Office was also present.
Excused members were Marjorie Day, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci, Jean LePre’, Christopher North,
Carolyn Peabody and Cynthia Smith. Nydia Portillo Palencia was absent. William Ruland, Liaison
from Town Board and Chief Flatley, Representative from Southold Town Police Dept. were also
absent.
Guests present included: Bill Flinter, Kelly Zeger, Matthew Bloch and Denise Civiletti from Southold
Local.
1) Motion to approve the minutes was made by LeRoy Heyliger and seconded by David Schultz. The
motion carried.
2) Discussion was held on the Unity Picnic Event. Some of the comments were “joyful, best one,
great, more food needed, nice, wonderful, concerned about the voter registration booth,” Thank-you
certificates will be sent out. Next year only 1 raffle ticket will be given to each attendee.

3) Helen Prince Award Night – The Helen Prince award night will be on October 5 at the Cutchogue
East School. The staff will be responsible for hanging up the art work. We will provide refreshments.

The committee to choose the recipient of the Helen Prince award will be held at 10 am on August 28
at St. Agnes. The committee will consist of Linda, Sonia, Valerie, LeRoy, JeanLePre'. They will need
guidelines. We will print 100 copies of the journal.

4) Jim Shaw invited the ABTF to a non-political vigil on September 7 at Mitchell’s Park in Greenport.
ABTF will NOT sponsor the event with him, but individuals may go and speak independently of the
committee.

5) The Orient Congregational Church is having an Inter-Faith Vigil on September 9 and has invited
the ABTF to attend.
6) We will work on having another Synergy event in the fall.
7) David Schultz suggested that the 3 East-End Anti-Bias Task Forces work together, possibly having
an event on the Sunday before Election Day.
Reports:
Mattituck- LeRoy reported that there were plaques given for the Girl Scout Gold Award and the Boy
Scout Eagle Scout. He suggested we pursue an award for Butch Lynch. He also questioned whether
the ABTF receives a yearly report of the Dignity Act from the school districts. He suggested that each
school representative from the ABTF committee should ask for an Annual Report of the Dignity Act –
Restorative Justice.
Fisher’s Island- Dave Schultz went over to Fisher’s Island with the Town Board. He said it was a
delightful voyage and he went into the school and met the new principal and the business manager
and assistant. They have 70 students and half of them are from Connecticut and pay tuition.
Police Department – They sent 2 officers to the picnic. They apologized for not coming to the
meetings but they are the same time as the Transportation Committee’s meetings. He will try and
come next month.
Guest Matthew Bloc addressed the committee concerning a man flying a confederate flag on public
property. It was mounted in his pick-up truck. Sonia will bring this matter to the Town Attorney and
find out what the Town Code is. Bill Flinter attended and is a retired Suffolk County Community
College professor. Mr. Gonzalez was waiting for the court to begin.0-
Motion to adjourn was made by Sue Dingle and seconded by LeRoy Heyliger.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:27 am.
