HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/09/2017 ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE MEETING JANUARY 9, 2017 SOUTHOLD TOWN ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE MINUTES The meeting was called to order at 10:15 am. MEMBERS PRESENT: Susan Dingle, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci, LeRoy Heyliger, Jean LePre’, Eleanor Lingo, Christopher North, Carolyn Peabody, Linda Ruland, Valerie Shelby, Cynthia Smith, Sonia Spar. GUESTS PRESENT: William Ruland, Liaison from Town Board; Denis Noncarrow; Liaison from Supervisor’s Office; Chief Flatley, Representative from Southold Town Police Department; Lynn Nyilas, Southold Town Youth Bureau Director; Katharine Schroeder, Southold Local; David Schultz and Margaret deCruz. MEMBERS EXCUSED: Marjorie Day, Debra Riva and Nydia Portillo Motion was made by Jean Le Pre and seconded by Loretta Hatzel-Geraci to accept the December minutes with the following corrections: 1)Remove Linda Ruland’s name from “Guests Present”; 2) LeRoy Heyliger was absent; 3) Rabbi Sheryll will be a participant in the Martin Luther King Celebration. The motion was carried. MARTIN LUTHER KING CELEBRATION: Sandwiches, water, cheese and crackers will be brought by Loretta Punch will be brought by Eleanor Desserts will be brought by every committee member Paper goods will be supplied by Linda Ruland It was noted that the media was contacted. The program will be as follows: Presiding – Val Shelby Welcome and Remarks- Charles Lauer Invocation – Rabbi Sheryll Choir – Clinton AME Memorial Choir – accompanied by Ted Terpin Reflections – Students from local schools; Dr. Anne Smith (Supt. of Mattituck-Cutchogue School District; Mayor George Hubbard; (Mayor of Greenport Village); Supervisor Scott Russell (Supervisor of Southold Town). Introduction of Key Note Speaker – Pastor Natalie Wimberly, Clinton Memorial AME Zion Church, Greenport Tribute to Frank LePre Closing – Invitation to eat Benediction SYNERGY - The Synergy Greenport meeting will be held on January 23 at St. Agnes Church in Greenport. The Chief of Police, Officer Chence Mayor Hubbard, 2 village Trustees and Professor Banks will be in attendance. We will use a classroom at the St. Agnes School, set the chairs up in a horseshoe shape and serve pizza and water. (Note: On the evening of Synergy there was such a crowd (estimate of 75) that the meeting got moved to a larger room in the building. Sue Dingle suggested we continue to support our “Respect & Civility” campaign. Discussion followed about bracelets. Lynn Nyilas, Southold Town Youth Bureau Director, put out a plea for students from Greenport to be on the Youth Board. REPORTS – POLICE – no report SCHOOLS – Greenport – Chris North reported on two events DISCUSSION – Discussion followed on the transparency of the Anti-Bias Task Force Committee’s finances. A suggestion was made to create an Excel file and to get a budget from the Comptroller’s office to make committee members aware of the committee’s finances. PEACE CALENDARS- Dave Schultz made a suggestion to purchase PEACE calendars, possibly with the money from the Martin Luther King Day. No action was taken. NEW BUSINESS – Sue Dingle was congratulated on receiving the Meritorious Award. A breakfast in Hauppauge th will be held on January 16. Valerie Shelby and Sonia Spar were recognized for being chosen 2016 Community Leaders of the Year by The Suffolk Times. Dignity Act- it was mentioned that all the local schools are supposed to be submitting a report outlining how they are following the Dignity Act. It was suggested the ABTF committee look at all the school’s reports. It was suggested that we check the dates for the picnic in August. The movie, Hidden Figures, was discussed and a suggestion was made that it be purchased and given to the local schools. ADJOURNMENT- Carolyn Peabody made a motion to adjourn the meeting.
