Box 1179 Southold, New York 11971 ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE FINAL MINUTES COMMITTEE MEETING May 15, 2017 The meeting was called to order at 10:06 am by Co-chairpersons, Sonia Spar and Valerie Shelby. Members present were Marjorie Day, Susan Dingle, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci, Jean LePre, Eleanor Lingo, Linda Ruland, David Schultz, Valerie Shelby, Cynthia Smith, Sonia Spar. William Ruland, Liaison from Town Board was also present. Absent members were LeRoy Heyliger, Louise Hug, Christopher North, Carolyn Peabody and Nydia Portillo Palenica. Denis Noncarrow, Liaison from Supervisor’s Office and Chief Flatley, Representative from Southold Town Police Dept. were also absent. One guest was present: Katharine Schroeder from Southold Local.Com. 1) Motion to approve the minutes with the following corrections was made Jean LePre’ and seconded by Susan Dingle. A) In #4- remove “Marjorie Day seconded it. The motion carried.” and put in “We will vote on it next month.” B) In #5- replace “Town of Greenport” with “Village of Greenport.” C) Remove item #13. The motion carried. 2) Discussion was held regarding religious groups at the picnic. We will put an ad in the paper asking for groups. We need to avoid the appearance of favoritism. 3) We are sorry to see Debra Riva leave. We welcome David Schultz to the committee. 4) Sonia gave a report on LeRoy Heyliger’s progress. 5) Mattituck School Presentation- Cutchogue East asked the ABTF to provide a speaker to share the mission of the ABTF. Christopher North and David Schultz attended. David prepared a power point. He said that Christopher North did a good job. 6) Website- We need to find out how to put info about the ABTF on the Town website. This has to be discussed with Denis and Lloyd Reisenberg. 7) Sue Dingle reported that she had attended the Riverhead ABTF meeting. She suggested that we coordinate with the Southampton and Riverhead ABTF committees. She also announced that the th East End Voter’s Coalition will be having an event in Ludlam Park in Riverhead on June 17. 8) Councilman Ruland reported that the issue of Louis Hug’s termination is still in the Town Attorney’s office and he will continue to follow it through. 9) Police Reports- A) Lady of Good Counsel in Mattituck had graffiti. B) There is a scam regarding Synergy participants. Sonia and the police went to a house to learn about the scam. C) There are other cases in Riverhead, as well as with our seniors and Latino immigrants. 10) School Reports- Cindy Smith shared that the Greenport District Superintendent announced that they will be forming enrichment clubs in the school and community. He shared that there are more Special Needs students in inclusion classrooms. He also encouraged the community to pass the Greenport school budget. 11) The committee decided to invite the school principals and superintendents to the June meeting concerning the Dignity Act. Sonia and Sue will draft an invite letter. Councilman Ruland reminded the committee of our responsibility to always include the Fisher’s Island School District when reaching out to our local school districts. 12) Sonia, David, Val and Marjorie expressed the desire to attend the Town Board’s annual trip to Fisher’s Island. thth 13) Unity Picnic- August 12. On June 7and 21st, the picnic committee will start meeting at 10 am at St. Agnes School in Greenport. 14) A report on the Unity Town Hall Meeting was given. 15) Val, Sonia, Sue, Loretta and David will work on suggestions for the Town Board. 16) The ABTF committee congratulated Eleanor Lingo on her Suffolk County Senior Citizen of the Year award. 17) Sue Dingle moved to adjourn the meeting.
