Box 1179 Southold, New York 11971 ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE COMMITTEE MEETING JULY 18, 2016 The meeting was called to order at 10:11 am by Co-chairperson, Valerie Shelby. Members present were: Valerie Shelby, Cindy Smith, Debra Riva, Susan Dingle, Jean LePre, LeRoy Heyliger, Marjorie Day, Carolyn Peabody, Eleanor Lingo, Christopher North, Linda Ruland, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci. Guests present were Denis Noncarrow, Liaison from the Supervisor’s Office, Chief Flatley, Representative from the Southold Town Police Department, and Margaret deCruz. Excused from the meeting were Sonia Spar and William Ruland. 1) A motion to approve the minutes was made by Susan Dingle and seconded by Christopher North with the following two corrections: Margaret deCruz was listed as a committee member and should have been listed as a guest and Sonia Spar’s name should be spelled as Sonia, not Sonja. The motion carried. 2) Incident Reports: A) Loretta questioned the incident report that was in the paper concerning the graffiti on the roof of Southold High School. B) Cindy Smith reported on a young boy who was bullied at the Fireman’s Carnival. Cindy and Loretta will make an appointment with Chief Flatley to discuss these two incidents. 3) Discussion was held on the Mission Statement, protocols and the need for a Welcome Packet for new committee members. Chris made a motion that a committee be formed to discuss these items. Chris, Cindy, Loretta and Debra volunteered to be on the committee. Susan Dingle seconded the motion. The motion carried. 4) Compliments of the letter that was written and published in the Suffolk Times were voiced. The committee was reminded that if we write a letter on behalf of the Anti-Bias Task Force Committee, it must be approved by the co-chairmen. 5) Brochure- The idea of re-doing the Anti-Bias Task Force Committee’s Brochure, publishing it in Spanish and on-line was discussed. th 6) Helen Prince Award - The Helen Prince award is to be given out on October 6. A committee to work on that evening’s activities was formed and consists of LeRoy, Loretta, Jean, Val, Carolyn and Marjorie. 7) Synergy- Christopher North reported that a second Synergy event was tentatively planned for th October 20 at the Greenport Firehouse. The time would be determined. Cindy, Chris, Val, Professor Banks, Sonia, Sue and Margaret offered to work on plans for the event. 8) A motion was made by Carolyn and seconded by Marjorie to look into and possibly make a proposal to expand the number of members of the Anti-Bias Task Force Committee. The motion passed. Denis volunteered to look into this. 9) A motion was made by Susan and seconded by Debra to allow people who are not on the Anti- Bias Task Force Committee to be a part of the sub-committee projects as long as they commit to the life of that project. The motion carried. 10) Picnic- Valerie passed out posters and fliers to all committee members. All members were asked to solicit donations. The following members offered to cover the following locations: Val and Loretta will do Main Street in Greenport. Cindy and Margaret will do Front Street. LeRoy and Sonia will do Mattituck. Linda will do Southold Village. Carolyn will do the North Road. Jean and Susan will do Cutchogue and New Suffolk as well as the Blue Duck in Southold. th A planning meeting for the picnic will be on Wednesday, July 27 at 10 am at Loretta’s office. Val and Eleanor will get the food. Eleanor will get the tent. Linda will get tablecloths and decorate the tables. 11) No School reports 12) New Business- Susan wondered about sending an expression of support for our police department. Nothing was decided. (Note: Linda Ruland asked Valerie after the meeting if she could put together a basket of goodies and take it to the Police Department from the Anti-Bias Task Force Committee. She said yes.) Motion was made by Carolyn and seconded by Cindy to adjourn. The meeting was adjourned at 11:48 am. Respectfully submitted, Linda Ruland
