ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE Southold Town `Ierh
Minutes of February 13, 2017 Meeting
The meeting was called to order at 10:06 a.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Susan Dingle, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci, Jean LePre', Eleanor Lingo, Carolyn Peabody, Nydia
Palencia, Linda Ruland, Valerie Shelby, Cynthia Smith, Sonia Spar.
GUESTS PRESENT: Jim Dinizio, Town Councilman Town of Southold, Kelly Zegere, Reporter from The Suffolk Times,
Krysten Massa, Reporter from The Suffolk Times, Katharine Schroeder, Reporter from Southold Local, Matthew Bloch,
David Schultz and Margaret deCruz.
MEMBERS EXCUSED: Marjorie Day, Debra Riva, Leroy Heyliger and Christopher North.
Motion was made by Cindy Smith and seconded by Sonia Spar to accept the January minutes . The motion was carried.
MARTIN LUTHER KING CELEBRATION: There was a wonderful crowd of people at the event. $650 00 was collected
for the Scholarship Fund. According to our budget, $500.00 was an honorarium for the speaker, $75.00 was given to the
musician and $124.76 was spent on food. There will be$113.00 spent from the scholarship fund to purchase books to be
placed in the local libraries. There will be labels put inside them acknowledging them as gifts from our committee, Sonia
and Val will draft the letter.
SYNERGY- The Synergy Mattituck meeting will be held at the Southold Town Human Resources Center in Mattituck on
April— 6,n. Chief Flatley and Professor Banks confirmed.
RESPECT AND CIVILITY CAMPAIGN-Some ideas were posters, stickers on entrances to buildings and bumper
stickers. Loretta, Sue and Sonia will be on a committee to work on it
MEMBERSHIP-Since we have discovered that the ABTF has 16 people on it, not 15, Linda will look into the membership
roll with the Town Clerk

POLICE
EPORTS–POLICE–no report
SCHOOLS–Mattituck-Anne Smith wants to coordinate dates to meet with the students. It is
easier if we go to the schools,.
DISCUSSION–Discussion followed on the following topics:
1)Unity Town Hall Meeting–March 26th–this is a collaboration between Sister Margaret and Carolyn Peabody to
create a network of communication to bring together concerns and to support one another They want to create
a committee to identify different problems.
2)Social Justice Conference(The Summit)This is the East End Committee of the Anti Bias Task Force and will be
spearheaded by Riverhead's ABTF. It will be held sometime in April. Maybe the 29th.
3) Greenport Events—A Cultural Festival and/or A Pride Parade, possibly on the day of the Unity Picnic.
4) Suffolk County ABTF dinner meeting on March 29th. Sue Dingle, Carolyn Peabody and Sonia will attend.
5) Marjorie Day invited everyone to Peconic Landing on February 18th at 4 pm for a program celebrating diversity.
6) First Baptist Church in Riverhead is having a Dinner Theatre on February 24th at 6340 pm. It will portray the life
of Harriet Tubman and the use of slave songs to escape slavery.
7) Possibly sponsor the film, Hidden Figures at the Mattituck Theatre, Sue will call to find out how to do that.
8) Cindy Smith will work on putting the artwork received from our local students on Channel 22.
9) Jean LePre suggested that the schools try to include the African-American Museum on the students' trips to
Washington D.C.
Sue Dingle moved to adjourn the meeting. Loretta seconded it. The meeting was adjourned at 11:05 am.
