Re: Mattituck Harbor Federal Navigation Project:
Dear Mr. Creamer:
Your lettar of December 6, 1988 to Supervisor Frank Murphy
concerning maintenance dredging of Mattituck Harbor was referred to
my office for a response.
The Trustees and the Town of Southold are very interested in the
commencement of maintenance operations as soon as is possible. At
the present time, navigation is seriously imperiled because of the
reduction in channel depth and size. It is not uncommon for fishing
vessels to run ~ground at low tide at the present time.
In addition, the Town is working in cooperation with the State
of New York Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Office, to
purchase the 'Carey Tank Farm. Part of this project involves 'aboat
launching ramp at this site. For safety, access and ability to
navigate, we would like thorough maintenance dredging in this area of
the inlet.

SUBJECT: Mattituck Harbor, A Federal Navigation Project
Dear Mr. Murphy:
This is to inform you that this office is currently evaluating
the feasibility and necessity for maintenance dredging of the Federal
Navigation Channel at Mattituck Harbor, New York~ If our engineering
and design study results show that there is a need for maintenance
dredging, commencement of the dredging operation will begin as soon as
environmental clearances and budgetary approvals are obtained.
To assist in our evaluation of this project, please provide this
office with any relevant information or reasons why maintenance
dredging is needed in the federally authorized navigation channel of
Mattituck Harbor, New York.
If you have any questions concerning this proposed project, please
contact Dr. Billy Tam of my staff at Telephone No. (212)264-9032.
