Southold Town Hall Conference Room A meeting of the Deer Management Task Force Committee was held Wednesday, January 11, 2016 at the Southold Town Hall Conference Room, Main Road, Southold. Present were: Members: Dave Dominy, John Rasweiler, Jeff Standish, Adam West, Rob Lenhert and Nancy Foote Call to order : Meeting was called to order by Chairperson Dave Dominy at 6:00 PM. Minutes from August . 2016/2017 Hunting Season : There were less deer reported this season. It was observed in some areas that there were less deer in general. There are more bucks but the rut was off, shortened. Deer did not move as much. There was more food available. Final numbers will be reviewed thru DEC report. The end of season survey was discussed and will be revisited. There was a total of 3 Veterans that participated this year. The committee agreed that with more advertisement, The new property, Brush Creek is in the process of being cleaned up before Suffolk County and Town purchases the property. Initiatives for next year: Extend season to March 31. Apply for special permit to use crossbows. Allow nuisance hunt in September. Ticks can be problematic with an early season. Nymphs are bad in September. Committee would like to see some hunters out early before the recreational hunt beginning October 1. Incentives can be offered. Some ideas: pay for license, arrowheads and/or treestands. Ask Town Board to consider using 2% monies to pay for incentives. Other ideas: Have Town plant a food patch to attract the deer. Nuisance Season 2017 : Last year with baiting only yielded 9 harvested deer. This year it is suggested to delegate someone to regulate zones. Each hunter will be assigned a specific zone(s) for the season. Program will have a team leader that will direct hunters to zones to strategically hunt zones. Certain properties cannot be baited. The team leader(s) will be the reference of contact. Use sweet feed in addition to corn for bait. New Position : Interviews were conducted last month and then re-advertised. More interviews were conducted last week. Town Board is working with Civil Service to get this position filled. Involve DMP committee to flesh out job responsibilities 1 The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 PM. Future meeting will be scheduled for last week in March 2017. Respectfully submitted, Nancy Foote Deer Management Task Force Committee Secretary 2
