Fix Fishers Island's Sidewalks
About this petition
The Island Community Board, on behalf of all residents and visitors to Fishers Island, NY, seeks to
remedy various infrastructure issues, including roads and sidewalks.
Fishers Island's sidewalks have been in desperate need of repair for decades. A comprehensive
report was submitted to the Town of Southold in 2008&2009. Few repairs have been made since
2009.
The 2008 report showed that 85% of Fishers Island's sidewalks are in "poor to extremely bad"
condition and in need of repair.
These damaged sidewalks present a hazard to all who utilize them on a daily basis. Many residents
choose to walk or jog in the street due to the condition of the sidewalks. Those who choose to use
the sidewalk must be constantly vigilant to avoid injury or mishap.

Comments: Many of us pay extraordinarily high property taxes on Fishers Island to
support the Town of Southold. When do we get some back?the idea of community taxes
is to support programs and infrastructure in the ENTIRE community, not just one region of
it! Are we"out of sight, out of mind?" Please be fair and fix our roads and sidewalks. I
know several people who have fallen at night and hurt themselves due to the crummy
sidewalks. In NY City a lawsuit would have followed similar incidents. Here, Southold gets
a petition. Please listen!

around kids on bikes using main, curvy roads instead of sidewalks (because they are so
bumpy) and walking/pushing a stroller at night.

Comments: I have a doughter who rides a bike or walks to work on the island all summer
and it is dangerous. I have a son who rides a bike to the school several days a week and
it is dangerous. My husband and I walk our 2 dogs several times a day and it is very
dangerous. We have young and older residents who are injured from utilizing the
sidewalks instead of the street, this is not right and has been neglected for far too long.
Do the right thing and repair the sidewalks please! Thank you.

Comments: Several parts of the sidewalks on the west end are in such horrible condition
that I cannot push a stroller along them without honestly fearing I will give my two year old
whiplash. They literally stop me in my tracks and I end up walking on the road instead.
Also, very few of the sidewalks have a slope to them when at a cross road. Bad for
Page 6 of 24
strollers, again, but seemingly impossible for a wheel chair, for sure. A good number of
islanders are aging and will possibly need the sssistance of a wheelchair to get around.
They will have no choice but to avoid the west-end of the island entirely. Doesn't this
seem a little unfair? Even illegal?

have had an accident but recognize that I have to stay ever vigilant of the broken and
uneven terrain. Please fix them!!

Comments: The sidewalks are a safety hazard. When walking on them, even knowing the
Page 7 of 24
state of disrepair, extreme care must be taken to not injure yourself. In the recent
pavement repair that was done last year the new pavement in front of my house was
incorrectly graded and leaves a large puddle of water that freezes in the winter. The town
was made aware and the company came back out to "fix" it. It is no better than it was.
When using a company for infrastructure work, please check to see if they know that
water flows downhill.

Comments: Living on Montauk Ave, also home of the only bar on the island, I am familiar
Page 20 of 24
with the very common situation of drunk patrons choosing to walk home in the middle of
the street, even up a steep hill where oncoming traffic would have no chance to avoid
them. Why? Because the sidewalks are so terrible- overgrown, buckled, otherwise
compromised, and well known for causing scrapes, bruises, and broken limbs-that it is
safer to trust that most drivers know to move slowly around there. In the daylight, it's
impossible to push anything but a jogging stroller with suspension around, as a standard
stroller would be stopped every few feet at buckles. In addition, many intersections (such
as Montauk and the one way street between Union Chapel and the Pequot) lack cutouts
that would facilitate use of the sidewalk. Please prioritize the safety of Fishers Island's
pedestrians!
